A program on my Windws XP SP2 laptop reported a corrupted file, so I ran
cmd.exe and scheduled CHKDSK /F to run on the next reboot. I rebooted, CHKDSK
ran and reported that it had corrected some errors, but when the computer
restarted, after the first bootup splash screen it hung up. I rebooted again;
CHKDSK started again; I elected to skip it, but then nothing happened beyond
that. The CHKDSK screen stayed on the monitor, and all action ceased. I tried
doing a repair from the OS installation disk. When the installation process
rebooted the computer, CHKDSK ran again and the computer hung at the CHKDSK
screen. I can't get past CHKDSK. Since I can never get into Windows, I don't
know how to remove the startup of CHKDSK from the startup menu or the
registry. None of the commands listed for the Recovery Console seem to apply.
I really don't want to have to reformat the drive, but I don't know what else
to do.

I should have added that this is Windows XP Pro SP2 with all published
updates, and I should have said the Logo screen rather than splash screen.
