If I have a backup done under Vista to an external hard drive, and I have reverted back to XP PRO, how can I get the restore wizard to recognize the backup file on the external drive ? Do I need to use another version of backup/restore under XP ? If I break out the backup file, there are 31 separate backups included there. Windows Vista's Backup and Restore tools are completely different from the Backup program that came with Windows XP and so the backup files are incompatible. 3. Windows Vista Backup uses zip files to store backups (theoretically you could extract the files but you also could have problems because the backup program splits files over several backup folders and it can become messy trying to combine all the files together in one folder/file. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsxp/bb264753.aspx How is System Restore different from Backup? [in XP] A.System Restore monitors only a core set of specified system and application file types (e.g. .exe, .dll etc), while Backup Utility typically backs up all files including users personal data files, ensuring a safe copy stored either on the local disk or to another medium. System Restore does not monitor changes to or recover users' personal data files such as documents, graphics, e-mail, and so on. While system data contained in System Restore's restore points are available to restore to for only a limited period (restore points older than 90 days are deleted by default), backups made by the Backup Utility can be recovered at any time. That is true: I was not discussing System Restore at all. Strictly the backup function under Vista, and wondering if i could get a restore done through the wizard under XP. I have not yet attempted to get this done as I have other priorities, but i will try this out over this coming weekend and post the results. If the files backed up under Vista are incompatible with XP, then it will not work and I will just have to gradually rebuild all I had under Vista ( favorites, emails, etc. ). I will post the results. Originally you said you wanted to restore your C: drive. Now you say you want to restore your Favorites and e-mail. Use IE's Import and Export Wizard for Favorites (and cookies.) So I thought he had used both systems i.e. the Vista Backup program AND the Vista System restore program.. The symbol / usually means and or so hence my inclusion about restore. Good luck Dave. Leonard I think you should pay more heed to your signature, errare humanum est, 'to err is human' and not be so quick to jump in and critize someone who was only trying to help, and if that small point about system restore was the only thing you objected to I think you can bite your tongue and not post any reply. If all the information is not pertinent I'm sure the OP can discern what information they want from the post. In fact I have seen some people post replies that were purely diatribes of useless information, or an overkill of information.
