Cleanmgr is disabled.... why?

Mark Hilbrink - 02 May 2008 01:25 GMT Hi,
For some reason, no matter which way I run it (even the EXE itself from its directory), CleanMgr just dies... no error message, nothing... it basically doesn't execute.
Is there a way to repair it, or can i get a new copy from Microsoft?
Thanks!

The usual problem with Disk CleanUp is the time taken to calculate how much space will be saved by compressing files. Does it complete this task before this task before it "dies".
I would be interested to see some details regarding your C drive / partition.
Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it is more informative.
An alternative to Disk CleanUp is cCleaner (freeware) which does a more thorough job than Disk CleanUp. Disk CleanUp has to be run for each user profile, whereas cCleaner only needs to be run once. http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp http://www.ccleaner.com/
With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. To be safe you should create a restore point before using cCleaner. cCleaner also offers backup before removal.
When using cCleaner think twice before checking Autocomplete Form History under Internet Explorer. You do get a warning but this one has irritating consequences. You may need to restore your system's recollection of passwords after use so keep a record off computer so that they can easily be re-entered.
Leave the Scan for Issues option alone.
cCleaner does not remove restore points. You need to use Disk CleanUp for this. Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore point.

> Hi, > [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > > Mark H. Mark Hilbrink - 02 May 2008 17:32 GMT Well, actually the Disk Cleanup doesn't respond at all... a window for it doesn't even come up!
And trying the Disk Defrag right now, the first time I did it, I could click the "Analyze" button, but then it hung. Now I click it and nothing happens at all! Maybe both std Windows programs are hosed! (Btw, last nite I ran the freeware "AusLogic" disk defrag, which is much better than the Windows one!).
I know about CCleaner, too, altho last time I used it, i think it got kinda dangerous to use... but I will consider it after we get these things going...

What are are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements? What firewall are you using?
Does Task Manager work? You can use Ctrl+Alt+Delete or Ctrl+Alt+Esc to access Task Manager? I am asking to establish whether something has disabled your system tools.
Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in a previous boot.
You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us
A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Task Mgr works just fine.
OK, I've figured out how to get the correct logs in EV, but if I posted them all here, it would go forever (even just the last boot or two). Are you sure you want me to post the raw text within this interface? Is there a way to attach a separate file instead?

Yes but only those within the precise criteria I have given you. You cannot have that many. You can omit that part of the Report beginning "For more information"
Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No Information Reports or Duplicates please.
You should not attach a separate file.
