I hate to admit it but I've owned my PC for 4 years and never defragmented my
hard drive. I use my PC for music apps. Well I finally got myself into a mode
of organizing things and began defragmenting the hard disk. Problem is nearly
my whole hard drive had defragmented files and it has now been nearly 24
hours since I began the process. I'm anxious to get beck to work on my music.
Can you defrag and run apps at the same time. By the way , the defragmenting
is going beautifully

You can - it will slow everything down.

Might I suggest getting JKDefrag and using its screensaver?  That way you
will be defragging all the time (when you are not around.)

I ran my PC for almost 5 years without using anything other than
Window's built-in defragger. Then, just for sh**s and giggles I
installed a trial of a third party defragger. It told me my disc didn't
need defragging!

There is more to defragmenting than just running Disk Defragmenter.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

I would add to that, visit Windows Sysinternals,

Windows Sysinternals
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx

and get PageDefrag:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897426.aspx

PageDefrag defrags the Windows swap file and the Windows Registry, which
can have a significant impact on overall Windows performance.
