When I use Backup the report gives the following
message, "Error returned while creating the volume shadow
coy:80042306". I gather that this means that open files
may not be copied. How can I get Backup to perform a
shadow copy?

Hi,

Please open Event Viewer (eventvwr.exe), and copy & paste in your
reply the recent VSS and VOLSNAP event logs.

Thanks, Adi

Hi Adi,
I cannot do a copy and paste using this online NG but the
event viewer states

"Volume shadow copy service error. Cannot find diff areas
for creating shadow copies. Please add at least one NTFS
drive to the system with enough free space. The free
space needed is at least 100Mb for each volume to be
backed up/showed."

I have loads of free space on my HDD and do this message
is bit of a mystery.

Many thanks, Daz

Additionally, I am running on FAT32 and so perhaps Shadow
Copy only works with NTFS?

Hi Daz,

Shadow copies can be created on FAT/FAT32 volumes too.

But you need to have at least one NTFS volume in your system, in order
to use this feature - even if this NTFS volume is not the one that you
want to backup.

Thanks, Adi

Just to confirm how to cure this - I had the same problem with a WINX
(Home) machine with all partitions were FAT32. I created a 3GB NTF
partion and volume shadow copy now works Ok. There does not seem to b
any need to tell backup what NTFS volume it should use it just find
it
