A friend of mine (honest) is trying to copy photos from
disk to his new computer that has Win XP Home.  Every
time he copies the photos they convert to a "read-only"
file.  When he changes properties away from read-only
they revert as soon sa he goes to another screen.  How
can he keep them as standard properties?

There is no way to reset them, as such. There is no problem with "read-only"
file. You just open it and see it. The problem comes when you want to edit
the file.
You get a warning that this is a "read only file" You just Save as and give
it another name, just add something to the original name like Edited. This
new file will no longer be read-only.
