The Print Screen feature, IrfanView, Movie Maker, and other apps have the ability to capture a single picture.

Related to this article:
1. When making such a single picture photostory, how is the movie encoded? Does it store only a single copy of the picture for all the pans or multiple cropped copies are stored for individual pans.
Unrelated to the article:
2. Whats wrong with the profiles used for DVD. Why is the picture so blurry when saved using these profiles.
3. Why is there a limit on time resolution in specifying the picture duration. One can specify 2.2 secs but not 2.235. The latter form should be acceptable when typed in... but it is rounded to nearest tenth of a sec. Why ? I want to match the picture durations with the beat of the background music which is hardly ever exactly a tenth of the sec. Is there any technical reason for this limitation ?
4. In an interview he mentioned that PhotoStory 3 supports plugin architecture, where can I have more information about this.

I removed photo story 2 initially, but when I discovered the new version did not have an option for VCD or DVD burning re-installed it, only to find that PS3 does not recognize PS2 files!? This is the only criticism I have on an otherwise amazing program. The loss of quality using WMP10 to burn is a shame. PLEASE let us know if a burning option is planned.

I then burnt that file to a DVD using Nero Vision Express. In Nero, I changed the burning setting to High Quality and Progressive Scan. The resulting DVD was MUCH better than saving it as a DVD in PS3.

Lisa B. - 08 Dec 2005 16:36 GMT Hi, I have a problem I am hoping I could get some help with. I downloaded PS3 and made my story only to find out that I dont have the VCD burning capability. I have no clue how to make a VCD now. I saved using the profiles and tried to burn that but it doesnt not work. I tried to download PS2, which I used before with out a problem, but now this version will only allow 5 pictures. Will someone pleas send me instructions oh how to burn a VCD from PS3 or give me some alternative suggestions?
Thank you

As you discovered...Photo Story 3 does not have the option to burn a VCD. If you previously burned a VCD with PS2 you must have had MS Plus! Digital Media Edition or Microsoft Digital Image Suite software installed.
It's possible that your burner came with software that has an option to burn a VCD. Check your manual for instructions.
As I understand it...the 30 day trial version of Corel Photo Album 6 has the option to burn a VCD.

To get the best image, I read that each should be 720X480.
So I resized to those pixels and set resolution to 72. Used 72 as this will be viewed on a computer. BUT if this DVD will be seen on a TV screen, do I use different settings?
Should that give me the best I can get?
My originals are 1 to 2 mgs in size. So I have great latitude, but no sense in using huge files if smaller ones will do.

[quoted text clipped - 9 lines] > > Tippy................ You don't need to worry about the size of the images, as long as they are bigger than your target format, they will have all the detail you need. You don't need to, and, in general, should not, reduce their size--let Photo Story do that when it renders your story.
There's no sense in using smaller images if larger ones will do. ;-) Storage is cheap and growing. Time is expensive and limited. So save your time by importing the full-resolution images.
I have found Photo Story 3's DVD profile too "soft" for my preferences on a large TV. I tell PS3 to render a 1024x768 .wmv file "for display on a computer", then use NeroVision Express 3 to import that .wmv file and burn a DVD. This provides excellent resolution in the photos.
(Though some with lots of near-horizontal or near-vertical detail may show "pixel crawl" during zooms or pans. This can be corrected by applying a small amount of smoothing ("gaussian blur") to the offending image(s) and then re-importing them into PS3.)

I think Microsoft should introduce a 640x480 20 fps mode in the options to save your stories to be viewed smootly in full screen with our X50v. By the way, I'm a little disappointed that the X50 just can't handle 640x480 30 fps WMV in a decent way.

I assume your video card is outputting to TV. Make sure that you have Windows Media Player 10 installed. Photo story uses a codec called Windows Media Video 9 Image v2. There are utilities to see what codecs you have installed on your machine.
http://www.moviecodec.com/questions/installedcodecs.html this page has two programs to check for the codecs that you have.

However, if you're willing to get a little advanced, you can follow the "Inside the wp3" guide on my site. The project file is simply a .cab file and you could search and replace the default duration (only a timesaver if you have a lot of photos).

go to...Start / Run and type:

Click...OK.
A dialog box should report the following:

My 20.9 MB file cant be built into a story (the one for Step 3). I always get this message all the time, "There is not enought memory or disk space to complete this operation, or program files for Photo Story 3 Windows or Windows Media Player are missing or may be corrupted. Quit other programs, free additional space on your hard disk, and then try again. If the issue is not resolved, reinstall Photo Story 3 for windows and Windows Media Player." My disk space is 8GB and because of this I also changed my RAM to 1GB. I had uninstalled and reinstalled Window Media Player and Photo Story 3 for 3 times. I had tried another 66.3 MB file (set into automatic panning and zooming) and it was ok. My 20.9 MB file contains a lot of display time less than 0.5 seconds of series of transitions. Do you think this is the problem? How can I solve this problem?
Your response is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Very nice article. I really like the cool features of Photo Story 3, especially the pan and zoom capabilities together with the wide variety of transitional effects. Using the wizard with it's defaults is really a no-brainer, and can already produce amazing hig-quality videos of still pictures.
Now I want to know if there's any way to MERGE or JOIN existing MULTIPLE PS3 PROJECTS INTO ONE large project. This would really be a neat feature to add to PS3's list of already cool features.
Your response would be very highly appreciated.

Gaston, My Man! - 09 Mar 2006 03:40 GMT Hello guys,
Thanks a lot for the very specific tips, John and Michael.
Now, those tips would be really cool if you can do them to merge _PhotoStory3_ project files -- you know, those with the WP3 extension. WMVs are no longer editable in those programs as far as photo pan/zoom options and timing/transiton effects are concerned.
Is there a way to do this on WP3 files?
Thanks again. Gaston

well now you got to know someone who's been wanting to do it. and you're right -- i'm no programmer, w/c is why i'm on this forum -- and it's no surprise since this is about XP consumer/end-user digital photos/movies tips. We all know that WMVs can easily be merged using the right tools (there's a lot of free ones). But WP3 project files are the source files that are PS3-editable. So merging WP3 project files would just logically result in a single, larger, and still PS3-editable project file.
the reason i posted my question is i want to merge several 30MB WP3 project files, each of which was created by importing several dozen 2MP+ JPGs. the photo sequence, pan/zoom options, and transition effects for each project file is almost perfect already (took me forever), although I might want to make some minor changes (e.g. insert/change photos, music, timing, whatever) in the resulting "merged" (if possible, w/c now i know is not) project file. now you may not find that "merging" capability to be really neccesary at this point. but we're aware how much of a drag it is to make the correct photo sequence for a project with a hundred or more of 3MP photos, esp. when you're pressed for time. of course you can just drag/drop using the thumbnailed photos timeline w/in PS3, but the problem is you can't select multiple frames simultaneously (Ctrl+click and Shift+click don't work), even if you want multiple frames to have the same transition effects and timing/duration settings. so I ended up renaming each jpeg file accordingly (001.jpg, 002.jpg, etc.), while in thumbnail view in windows explorer, before importing them altogether to my individual project files.
so one should not just be after the resulting WMV, but the WP3 file as well. and i'm sure we're aware that once you've imported those tons and tons of photos (up to 300/project) to your project, you no longer need to retain those photos in your hard drive (if you need to free up some space and you already have copies of them somewhere else -- e.g. CD/DVD) even if you'll need to edit your project later.
again, as a free product, PhotoStory3 is really impressive and cool already. and like those who've been using it, i have liked it the first time i saw it. adding a couple of very simple/basic but truly time-saving features is just gonna make it a lot better.
well, i guess i can just consider the two features below as my top wishlist items for any future PS3 upgrades: (1) the ability to merge multiple project files into a single WP3 file (2) the ability to select multiple frames simultaneously w/in the PS3 project thumbnailed photos timeline
Anyway, thanks for the time. :-) =====================

But, of course, this would not overcome the 300 photo limitation of PS3, since PS3 is the only application that can "play" .ps3 files.
If find that generating the .wmv files from PS3 and combining them in a DVD authoring tool is quite adequate.
If, for some reason, I feel that I need to ajust one or more of the segments, I return to PS3, edit the segment(s), re-generate the .wmv's, and re-burn the DVD.
The only way this would get *really* easier would be if I could burn a high-resolution DVD of a PS3 show directly from PS3--and the Sonic encoder only produces blurry DVDs.

The controls would need to be split out so that what was being set identically could be restricted just to a few things--like duration.
In practice, I find that I seldom set several pictures to the same parameters--except time--and there I sometimes want a "pattern" to be repeated to match the rhythm of the music, so a simple "set all to a fixed value" wouldn't cut it.
Maybe making all the photo parameters editable and block copyable and pasteable as in a spreadsheet would be the way to go. In fact, having them literally in a spreadsheet, with the first column being a thumbnail of the picture, would be outstanding.

Gaston, My Man! - 09 Mar 2006 09:58 GMT Thanks, Mike.
Well I'm sorry if I wasn't able to get the real message across in my earlier post -- well, it's not about overcoming any fixed limitation as to the number of photos that can be imported to a single PS3 (.WP3, not .PS3) project file, or what does or does not make sense to any PS3 user. I just thought that, for "really behind" users like me -- who sometimes work without the luxury of time and a fast PC, who just want to merge existing project files and apply the same duration settings to multiple frames -- having those two features is not too much to ask for. And also, making PS3 look like Excel may make sense to some, but not all.
:-)

PapaJohn (MVP) - 09 Mar 2006 17:10 GMT I'm currently working on a test project with just two pictures in it... both copies of an 11 megapixil image.... I want the identical settings for the panning/zooming/transitions/duration settings. Here's my approach.
1 - Open the saved project... it'll create a temporary folder with copies of the files in it. 2 - The pictures will have names of 0.jpg, 1.jpg, etc.... maybe BMP if that's what you used. It doesn't keep the original file names. This is one issue with combining two projects as you'll have two sets of files with the same names. 3 - Rename my new pictures with the same 0.jpg, 1.jpg, etc.... and replace the temporary ones with them 4 - Save the open project to a new project file name... it'll carry the new pictures into the new project file 5 - Render the story and it'll have you new pictures.
It might work in your case too... see the Photo Story 3 > Narration and Motion page of my website for info about the location of the temporary files... I first got into them when swapping out the music/narration files.

But when I play it back, no narration of the photos plays. Do you know how to get this part of the program to work.

I have been using PS3 for a while and have created many nice slides shows. I bought the sonic DVD software and have been able to convert them into DVD's.
I have recently started making slide shows that are longer than previous ones and when I come back to my saved files that I want to edit, they are corrupt and won't open. Is there something I can do? Does this just happen with longer files? It is very frustrating.
Thanks

Roze62 - 24 Mar 2006 20:54 GMT I just started using the program and so far I'm liking it. The only thing I don't like and maybe you know of a different way to go about it, but, I find it a pain to try to re-organize pictures or to add new pictures to the story. What I mean is, suppose I have a whole group of pictures that I want to add to the story, but, it should go in the middle. Well this program only allows you to add new pics at the end of the story so then you're having to drag ALL of the pictures one at a time to the middle of the story. Is there an easier way to do this?
Thanks in advance!

dealco - 12 Apr 2006 16:42 GMT I saved one story on a network folder. Now, as I am trying to use the Roxio plug in to burn new stories to DVD, all the saves go to that same network folder, even if I manually try to change it. Roxio then will not burn the DVD from a network location. The Roxio guy says it is a Photo Story issue. I have uninstalled PS 3, shut down and rebooted, and reinstalled, and the program still sends new files off to the network share. Any suggestions?

I am having a problem, that the program is crashing whenever I try to save a project. This happened in a slide show I was working on, and I cannot open that file anymore, since it is "corrupt". I tried to open another show and save it, and although I can open it OK, I cannot save the project, the program shuts down. I have tried removing the program and re-installing twice, same problem.
I can open a file labelled ---.bak, and have saved as a video that I burned on a CD, but cannot save as a Photo Story project file.
I'm stumped, and would rather not start the project over from scratch. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Andy

Why is there no button to duplicate a picture? Sometimes I'll be in the middle of a 30-40 photos PS and need a second (duplicate) photo of something. Often by the time I go searching for the photo, I have lost track of my "bright idea". It would seem MS could put a duplicate-generating button that would immediately create the dup right where it should be.
MaryT - 12 Nov 2006 00:36 GMT This is a BRILLIANT programme and I will never be able to go back to ordinary slideshows! There is just one small problem I have: when I do the continuous panning in one photo, I get a kind of "bump" effect each time I reach one of the edges of the photo. I've tried moving the frame a little away from the edges, but that doesn't stop it. I noticed this effect in the demonstration video as well, so maybe it is something I will have to live with!

Didn't realise previous post had "posted" hence another from me on same subject!! Thanks for your advice but I did uncheck the box, and there is still a slight "bump" as the pan reaches the far side - I notice that the Venice example has this too. I can think of worse things to live with, given that the end product is so good! In fact, I can see my video camera becoming redundant for scenery, as this is so much better!
> you eliminate the 'bump' by unchecking the default of using a transition > between the two pix.... [quoted text clipped - 24 lines] > >> Tech Editor > >> (This post provided as is and implies no warranties) MaryT - 18 Nov 2006 12:25 GMT Great programme, creates stunning slide shows, - people even think they are videos!! But - has anyone discovered how to stop the "bumping" effect you get when you use a single image like the Venice example, and you reach the edge of the picture?? I've tried ending the pan away from the edge but it still happens. The other thing that I find slightly annoying is that when you're using text, it defaults to the original setting when you go to the next image. However, these really are MINOR gripes, as the end product is so good!
> Create a Story from a Single Still Photo with Photo Story 3 > [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > Tech Editor > (This post provided as is and implies no warranties) JL4VIDEO - 23 Nov 2006 19:15 GMT hello This is a usefull trick which I have been using for some time now: I put each picture that I want to zoom or pan 3 times in a row on the time-line. Display time of the first and the third will be set to a few tenths of a second, while using no motion for both. In the middle picture we will apply zoom or pan as we intended to do, and I prefer to leave the decision about the display time to PS3 automatic. No transition should be used in each block of three; any transition can be used between two blocks. It is a lot of work but the result is nice to look at! For a good example go to my personal web-album http://nuclea-ski.magix.net/ and then to "multimedia/slideshows" where you run the file "ski-landscape.wmv" Throughout that little video poem this technique was used several times

On your "Save your story" screen... click the "Settings" button.
Try choosing a different profile. For example: "Profile for e-mail - 3 (320x240)"
If you did not save your .wp3 project file and do not want to recreate the project... try opening the .wmv file in Windows Movie Maker and save it for e-mail.
Drag the movie to the timeline and go to... File / Save Movie File / E-mail
Save the movie to your hard drive and then upload it.

Check the manual for your player and see if VCDs are supported.
And...some players will just not play home made VCDs or DVDs...the newer your player is, the better your chances are.
