Foggy - 21 Jan 2008 15:40 GMT I have recently scanned about 80 old photos to a folder in My Pictures. All of a sudden for no apparent reason they became jumbled up,some disappeared, some were duplicated and the names I had assigned to each picture were no longer relevant to that picture. All this was in Thumbnail. Changing to Filmstrip view, the large picture was not the same as the small highlighted picture below and changing to Preview, all the pictures were present in the correct order and correctly named ! Can anyone throw any light on what has happened and how I can go back to square one-please,please,please.

The pictures that disappeared may have been overwritten (replaced) with other files of the same name.
The unwanted copies (I'm guessing they say... Copy of xxx.jpg?) may have been created when you tried to multiple select a group of pictures and move them.
To correct the thumbnail issue...try copying the complete group of pictures into a new folder.

Yves Alarie - 21 Jan 2008 16:01 GMT 1. Make a new folder under My Picture 2. Open the folder containing the 80 photos 3. Select all the pictures in the folder (hold the Ctrl key down and press the letter A, this will highlight all the files in blue) 4. Copy all the selected files to the clipboard(hold the Ctrl key down and press the letter C) 5. Open the new folder you made and paste the files in it (hold the Ctrl key down and press the letter V. 6. Are the files in the proper order?
If the above works, let us know and we will tell you how to correct the order in your original folder.

Foggy - 21 Jan 2008 17:30 GMT Yves, Thank you so much .I have done as instructed and although they are not in the right order, they are all there now and the duplicates have been removed and the names all correspond to the right picture.Brilliant. Please post the second set of instructions. (This is the second reply I have sent but the 1st one didn't seem to get posted)
> 1. Make a new folder under My Picture > 2. Open the folder containing the 80 photos [quoted text clipped - 20 lines] > > happened > > and how I can go back to square one-please,please,please. Yves Alarie - 22 Jan 2008 04:27 GMT OK. At least you now have all of them. Sorry for the delay in responding. So now they are not in the right order. By "not in the right order" what do you mean? The order that you scanned them in?
So let us do some work to understand how XP sorts or lists files. 1. Open the folder 2. The photos are now displayed in Thumbnail view. 3. Click on the Views icon and then change Thumbnails to Details. 4. Now you have a list of file names. They are sorted (or listed) by numerical/alphabetical order. So you would see something like this: 1_Filename.jpg Filename.jpg My filename.jpg
1_Filename is listed first because numerical takes priority over alphabetical. Then you have Filename and then My filename listed in alphabetical order. So I am not sure how you named your files,as you scanned them, but you cannot expect them to be in the order you scanned them unless you use a numerical system to order them. You can use something like 1_Uncle Joe 2_Aunt Millie 3_Brother John and they will then be listed in this order in your folder. However if you do not use a number in front they will be listed: Aunt Millie Brother John Uncle Joe regardless of the order you scanned the pictures for the simple reason that files are sorted (or listed) in numerical/alphabetical order and not in the order they are scanned, or your scanner may have the option of naming all files automatically and incrementing .001 etc. such as image.001 image.002 etc. but here it will always be "image" as the starting file name and not Uncle Joe etc.
If you want to control how files are listed in a folder, you can learn how XP sorts files and how you can batch rename. Look at this site: http://www.papajohn.org/MM2-OrganizePictures.html and with a little bit of work you will understand how to name photo files and place them in the order you want in a folder.
Now, why did you have this problem with your folder? Difficult to say but some corruption of the thumbs.db file probably occurred. I did not want you to correct it as given below, just in case I would be wrong and your photos would be lost. But now that you have your photos in a new folder, try to repair the original folder. 1. Open your original folder 2. Change the Views from Thumbnails to Details. 3. Look at the list of files listed in the folder 4. A file, thumbs.db, should be listed there. Do you see it? If not, click on Tools on the top bar, then on Folder Options and then on the View Tab and scroll down and click on Show hidden files and folders. After you do this, close the folder and open it again and you should now see this thumbs.db file listed in the folder. Delete this file. When you delete it you will get a message that this is a system file etc. etc. Just say Yes to delete. Close the folder and open it, the thumbs.db file will be automatically made again and listed in the folder. Most probably your files will be listed just like in the new folder you made and copied your files into. Let us know if this did the trick or not. The idea is simply to have a new thumbs.db file to replace a possibly corrupted one since XP automatically generates this file, if not there, when opening a photo file folder.

Foggy - 24 Jan 2008 16:56 GMT Many thanks,I have read and understood your explanation on numbering and also the papajohn document.Since I have named each photo with the name of the place visited, I will put the number in front of each name. However,I have run up against a problem in the second half of your message. The thumbs.db file was not there so I went to Tools etc and got down to 'Show hidden files and folders'. I checked the button and clicked apply, then closed the Folders Options Window. Is that what you meant when you said close the folder? You then say delete this file - do you mean the window with the list of 'details' on it? If so Deleting it will just send it to the recycle bin and I don't get any message about it being a system file....have I missed something somewhere? Sorry to be a pain but I am very new to this !
> OK. At least you now have all of them. > Sorry for the delay in responding. [quoted text clipped - 104 lines] > >> > happened > >> > and how I can go back to square one-please,please,please. Yves Alarie - 25 Jan 2008 18:18 GMT No need to be sorry to be a pain. We all, at one point, were new to this! So don't worry about asking questions. The idea is to learn.
What I want you to do is simply to open your old folder, set the Views to Details so you see a list of file names and you see the file: thumbs.db listed in this folder with all your photo files. Then you click on the thumbs.db file so it is highlighted in blue. Then you press on the Delete key to delete this file. After you press on the Delete key a window should open with a message that this is a system file and do you really want to delete this file. You answer Yes. After you do this, close the folder (just go back to My Pictures, for example or to any other item on your computer) and then go back and open the folder. A new thumbs.db file will be automatically made by XP and listed there (it will not be the old one you just deleted and was sent to the recycle bin). With this newly made thumbs.db file I think you will recover all your photo files in the proper order. Something did happen to corrupt the original thumbs.db file but I did not want to take a chance giving you the above instructions, instead I had you copy the files in a new folder. When you did so, a new thumbs.db file was made automatically in the new folder. So here, if you delete the thumbs.db file (probably corrupted) in your old folder and you close the folder and open it again, XP should make a correct new thumbs.db file automatically and it should work just like making a new folder and copying your files there. So if this happens again it is simpler to delete the thumbs.db file than making a new folder and copying your files there.
Putting a number in front of each name is OK. I have no problem with this. However, this takes a lot of time because you have to rename each individual file. Better to group files and then use a number in front for each group and a number at the end for each file in each group since you can batch number the number at the end of all the files in each group. Will save you a lot of time. Dig a little more in the papajohn renaming system. I wrote this several years ago when XP came out and a photography club wanted a quick and easy way to rename files to maintain them is a specific order. Papajohn was nice enough to take my "wording" and place this on his site with some graphics making it easier to understand. Lucky for you, you are just starting so you don't have that may files yet and you can afford spending some time to experiment. This is a very friendly site, we simply provide help. We don't care if you are just starting.

Foggy - 26 Jan 2008 14:46 GMT I still cannot find the thumbs.db file in the list in details view. However, I have tried something else: I have opened My Pictures window and changed to details view. I have clicked on the folder with my 80 photos in it and selected Properties. In the General Tab it tells me I have 81 files and 0 folders. Presumably this extra file is the thumbs.db file which I cannot find? Am I right and if so, how do I get it to show up so I can follow your previous instructions? Goodness, doesn't life get complicated when you start playing on computers !

Gord Dibben - 26 Jan 2008 17:54 GMT As well as showing Tools>Folder Options>View>Hidden Files and Folders you must also remove the checkmark from "Hide Protected Operating System Files" in order to see Thumbs.db files.
