I have tried to install the Fax option in XP Home Edition, but get the
instruction to insert my Windows XP Home Edition Service PAck 2 CD.  I don't
have one!!  I have updated my XP via the Microsoft update website, but it
doesn't list SP@ as an option for me to download.  What can I do to get the
fax option to work

What happens if you insert the CD for the version you do have?

A next-to last resort option is to use Install/Remove programs to remove
SP2, restart, install the fax software modules, re-apply the SP2 update.

Let us know.

Tom, thanks, when I do insert my original Windows XP CD, I get a pop up
screen titled Files "Needed" It says "Some files on Windows XP Home Edition
Service PAck 2 CD are needed

Insert Windows XP Home Edition Service PAck 2 CD into the drive below and
then click OK

Then it says Copy files from , and there's a box below that says D:\i386.
WHen I click OK, the box just stays there and makes a pinging sound.  I
cannot get nay further.

Copy files from should read:  C:\i386 or C:\Windows\i386
Those files should be on your harddrive (C).
"D" is probably your CD-Rom

Is D: your CD-ROM?

If you "Explorer" the Windows XP Home CD in that drive, is the i386
directory present directly off the root? i.e. does D:\i386 exist?

It does on the Windows XP Home with SP2 CD. I just checked and I recall
that it does on the "Gold"/as originally released CD.

Is the CD clean and free of scratches?

I would create a directory on the HD called XPHome. Then I would copy the
entire i386 directory from the CD to that directory. The path to the
copied files would be c:\XPHome\i386. Next, point the install at that
directory when it gets to the file copy stage.

Also, do check out Byte's suggestion. What he intends (if I misinterpret,
hopefully he'll correct me) is to point the installer to the i386
directory already present on your HD. With Windows XP Pro, that directory
would be c:\windows\Driver Cache\i386. I don't have a XP Home install
handy to check it.

Let us know.

Try pointing your Fax install to \windows\servicepackfiles\i386 The file(s)
you are looking for may be there. Suposedly that is where the service pack
two files that you didn't need right now at the time of the service pack
install were put. If that doesn't work, start searching google for how to do
a slipstream.

Note: Windows XP Fax has lots of problems, so even if it installs ok, don't
expect smooth sailing.

While it is a good idea to put the i386 folder from the install disk on your
hard disk for convenience, don't expect it to fix your problem.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Dick -- after trying everyone's suggestions, I heeded your advice
about Windows Fax not being very good anyway, and downloaded "Mighty Fax"
which appears to be very intuitive, easy to use and inexpensive!  Wish I had
done this a few days ago, it would hve saved me hours of frustration and
wasted time!
