Re-install SP2 to get Remote assistance to work

I get an error "Remote assistance failed. Please try again" when
clicking on an invitation. There are a lot of postings regarding this
error, but the only solution I have seen so far, was a guy who
reinstalled SP2 by downloading the entire SP from Microsoft. This solved
his problem, indicating that there must have been some kind of mess in
the XP-installation. I have checked my XP-installation, and there are no
errors in it.

I have downloaded the SP2, but before proceeding with an install I hope
hope someone could tell how to do this on my fully updated computer with
SP2? Should I just run the file to reinstall on top of the present
installation, or do I need to somehow remove SP2 before installing?

Thanks!

Well..
Reinstallation of the Service Pack is nothing too dangerous.  You just run
it and install.  No need to remove.
I would go check WindowsUpdate after you were done, however.

However - I wouldn't do it unless you already have some sort of backup
regime already in place and have just finished backing up your critical
data - because anything *can* happen.

Thanks. Actually, updating the entire SP2 on top of my existing fully
updated SP2 computer solved the problem for me also. So getting service
packs via Windows Update seems to create problems for Remote Assistance
/ Remote Desktop.

Actually - your case is fairly unique.  It does *not* cause problems for
most people.  In fact - most likely get their updates via automatic updates
followed by those who use the windowsupdate web page.  Something just
happened in your transfer (more than likely) or possibly something got
changed later that corrupted a file or two you only used for Remote
Assistance.

Usually - only IT admins get the patches in a way other than the *normal*
two methods.. Even when it comes to service packs. =)
