I am from England and will be going to New York on business soon.  Whilst I'm
there I would like to use Remote Desktop on XP Pro, probably from from wifi
connetions around the city (I hear they are free in cafes and bars) to
connect to my pc at home (I work from home).  What are the security risks and
can anyone offer me some advice?

Thanks!

The Remote Desktop (RDP) data stream is natively encrypted so that minimizes
the risk from the start. With that said some folks, including myself, run
RDP through a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or Secure Shell (SSH) tunnel for
added security. SSH is pretty easy to setup and use. Use a *strong* password
or a private/public key pair protected with a strong passphrase.

I installed pcanywhere ver 12,but cannot get it properly connecting
laptop-to office, while the web based logmein, works easily,
I need a help forum just for configuring pcanywhere ver 12, for
dummies ..LOL

The web-based logmein is likely working because it can get through
firewalls.
Where you would need to configure any firewalls/NAT devices to get
PCAnyWhere to work properly.

Hey,

Try logmein  www.logmein.com
You will need the PC at home to have the software installed and then
you can access the desktop from anywere using the web !!!!  It is
encrypted with 128 bit. The software should install quite quickly.

If you do not feel comfy with that then cygwin (ssh) connection and RDP
or VNC.

Down side to VNC is it is not as secure as RDP BUT it will allow you to
view your desktop.
Down side of RDP... it will log the currently loged in user out and you
have to login again when you connect.

Try Both  CYGWIN and Logmein  (Both FREE !!!)

Agreed about Logmein. It's the way to go in my opinion
