I'm trying to use the recovery console to rebuild my
boot.ini file.  It disappeared for some unknown reason.

I have a standalone PC, it is not networked.  (My
personal PC) and I do not use passwords on my computer.

When I boot from the XP system CD and chose recovery
console, I am asked to provide the administrator's
password.  Well, there are NO passwords, yet I'm being
prompted for it.  I am unable to get to the recovery
console because I'm asked to give a password that doesn't
exist.  I tried just entering when prompted, but, that
doesn't work.

Does anyone know of a workaround, or a way I can get to
the recovery console?

I would appreciate your advice.

I've been having the same run around as well
Try this instead
Do not go to the recovery console instead select the reinstall option (don't worry you are not reformating),hit F8 to agree to the license agreement. after that you will have several options and you should "see" your drive info. highlite your current drive information and select repair. This is a way to get you to the same place as the recovery console but without the password
I wish you luck I didn't have any so it most be around someplace.

Ifthe part below does not work the the only you have really , is to do a
parallel install next to the OS you aleady have and move your info over to
the new copy. This is easier said then done and needs to be a last resort..
contact microsoft suport for help in doing this..

reason for the admin password is because of security. it usually is blank
when you enter the recovery console. one reason it is asking for a password
is you may have been hit by a hijacker or virus or malware which has chnaged
the admin password . this is really only thing that can change this
password.

When asked for the password that doesn't exist, just hit enter

As I mentioned in my original post, I've tried that, and
it didn't work.  Thanks for your reply.
