on a standalone XP system, how do I stop the logon prompt from appearing and have the system automatically logn as a specified user (like if you install XP from scratch)?

Click Start, Run and enter CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2.   In the list of users, select the user you want automatically logged on.  Then uncheck Users must enter a username and password............  click Apply.  In the next dialog, enter the password for the user account you selected, if any.  OK your way out.
