My Dell laptop did not come with a Windows XP disk. I was going to format my
hard drive, but I have no way of getting Windows back on my machine. I have a
Windows XP disk from my desktop PC and I was wondering if I could use that
disk, but use the information from the Windows software on my laptop.  I
don't have the CD Key for the software on my Dell Laptop and I was wondering
if there might be a way of finding it by looking on the Computer itself. Any
help would be GREAT! Thanks so much.

All new Dell computers ship with a Dell Windows XP Reinstallation CD.
Your Dell Product Key will only work with that particular CD.  If you
misplaced it, contact Dell support and request a replacement. Otherwise,
you'll have to purchase a conventional "Full Version" of Windows XP
if you wish to reinstall Windows XP on your Dell laptop.

Your Windows XP CD for your desktop will not accept a Dell Product Key.

 Hi Matthew;
Microsoft will not replace any embedded software.  You can resolve
your issue
much faster by calling Dell and sharing your dilema.  Dell should send you
not only
restoration software, but also for your drivers.  Good Luck, Lornac

Interesting, every Dell Laptop we've ordered in the last three years has
come with either a OS CD or a Recovery CD set, and drivers CD too.

If you didn't get an XP disk, does it at least have the MS XP Installation
key on the case? It should be on the bottom of the laptop - if it doesn't
have a official MS key sticker then it didn't come from Dell with XP.

If you've lost/misplaced your Dell recovery CD's you can order a new set
from Dell.

Take a look on the bottom of your laptop. There should be a
sticker with the 25 digit XP product key. If it's not there you
can download and run the following program on your machine to
display both your Windows key and Office key (if installed):

When did you get your laptop and what model number is it? It's
possible that your reinstallation software is located on a hidden
partition on your hard drive. You might want to contact Dell's
support and see if they can give you some guidance on this
matter.

Matthew;
If you got the computer from Dell, contact Dell for the missing Product Key
as well as the appropriate CD.

If you bought the computer second hand, you do not have a valid license
without the original Product Key and original CD.
Contact the seller.

If you obtained this Laptop from a legitimate source, then all the 'shiiping
kit' should have been supplied.

This includes User Manuals, Recovery Kit etc.

If your PC was obtained from unscrupulous providers then you may be up the
creek.

If you are confident that everthing should have come with the PC call Dell
and explain the problem.  If the PC was bought second hand or light fingered,
go and BUY a full XP version - retail edition.
