I believe I have a virus, because I cannot open any programs, and after shut
the computer down, it will NOT re-boot. When this all started, everytime i
tried to open a programme, a pop-up appeared, bearing the name 'The French
Hacker' and using swearing words. Does this qualify it as a virus or will it
have some other name. I know what I would call it!

No. That qualifies as a faux conclusion based on incomplete information.
I looked in Virus Libraries and found no virus with the search string "French Hacker".
True viruses WANT your computer to work so theu can do their main objective - spread.
The definition of a virus is that it self replicates.
You may have non viral malware, you may have a virus worm or Trojan. However, that can not
be determined if the computer can't boot. The objective would have to determine why it
won't boot. You have supplied zero information to go on.
Did it boot and fail in a BSoD (Blue Screen of Death) ?
Did it just never load ?
Was an error message displayed and if "yes" then what EXACTLY was the error message ?
Can you boot into Safe Mode ?
Yada, yada, etc, etc...
You need to supply facts all the facts possible.
Everthing that was written in the second post SHOULD have been in the first post.

From what I've read elsewhere Trojan Defense Suite is supposed to be able to
remove this one:

Microsoft supply OEM on the basis that the vendor will support the product
properly.. surely, the vendor is at fault?..

I think so Mike. I think if you buy a PC with an OS, then the purchaser has the full right
to have and own the complete set of installations files for that OS. The owner should be
able to wipe the PC clean and reinstall the OS at will. I think that is a consumer's right,
not a privilege.

.. and there lies the problem.. some vendors do little or nothing.. my own
view is that the vendor should supply an OEM CD plus whatever
software/driver package is first included in the sale.. I don't think that
they will listen to little old me though..
It makes it awkward for us to recommend anything other than to go back to
the vendor or buy a new copy.. not a good situation at all..

I too had the problem, Cyberbob 33 is the culprit. I had not updated m
Kaspersky AV in time to detect it and had to reload XP to get over th
problem.I reloaded Kaspersky , updated and it found the infected file
which I had downloaded thru Limewire. The virus looks for MP3 files an
wipes them out along with other things so that the system won't boo
properly
Norton doesn't list it on their site , not sure if anyone else does
Naughty boy, as I was , the infected file is a supposed crack for
popular DVD copying program and is the only means listed of spreadin
the virus, as far as I am aware
Beware of hackers bearing gifts
Good luc
