I work in a small office environment and have just come to need to reinstall
windows xp. I know the pc was running Windows XP pro and was purchased from
dell. I dont have the old cd (pre sp1) but i do have a new dell cd (Sp2).
Will the  product key work since they are both (OEM?) cd's or do i need to
try to find an old cd? i'm not a pc guy so i don't know much about the cds
but i did some research, which is why i'm confused. Thanks in advance for any
help.

Likely work fine.
Being Dell's that is. (Unless that CD happens to be for a laptop.)
