Hello,
In needing to reinstall Win XP Pro, I reduced the partitions to one and so
couldn't boot up into Windows and apparently need to edit the boot.ini file
to reflect the number of partitions now.
I booted Win xp from cd and got into the Recovery mode(I'm new to this) and
trying to use b elieve is the bootcfg command set-the Edit command-to edit
the file but apparently the edit command is not present or working.
Any ideas how to fix the boot.ini file? Should I just use the Rebuild
command of bootcfg and just rebuild the whole think, and anything I need to
keep in mind in doing that?
Thanks, God bless
Van

Just use Notepad to edit c:\boot.ini.  If you can't see boot.ini in
Windows Explorer, it's because it's still a hidden file.  If so, go to
Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab/Hidden files - check "Show
hidden files and folders".

In editing boot.ini, all you have to do is to remove the undesired
entry under the line "[operating systems]" so that only the line which
contains the no. of the desired partition is left (presumablly partition
1).

That means remove the one that says:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="(your favorite name here)" /fastdetect

and keep the other one (which should match the entry in the
"default" line).

If you want to be a purist, you can also set the timeout value to 0,
but that won't be really necessary since ntldr will see that there is only
one OS entry.

Thanks for your suggestions Timothy. However I can't get into Windows but can
only operate in Recovery mode and apparently use the bootcfg commands.
Thanks

Hello Van,
Use bootcfg /rebuild to add the entry caused by the change in partitions.
This should allow you to boot back into the OS where you will have tools to
edit the boot.ini to remove the other entries.
Thanks,
