Dual boot on a Thinkpad with XP pre-installed

Hi,

A friend of mine just bought a new Lenovo (IBM) Thinkpad Z60m notebook
computer. He has asked me to help him install a dual boot system with WinXP
and Win98.

The problem is that the computer comes with XP pre-installed and uses a
sophisticated method of recovery and setup - with a 3GB partitioned
pre-desktop area where it holds the backup clean XP system. My friend also
got a separate recovery CD with XP but it installs the same way - wiping out
the entire HD and repartitioning with the 3GB pre-desktop area.

I really have no idea as to what the correct procedure would be in order to
create a dual boot system with 98. Should I wipe everything clean using
fdisk, then install 98 and finally XP from a different CD? Then how will I
have all of the accompanying programs that are automatically installed
through the IBM recovery CD?
Should I instead use the existing XP install, create a new partition for 98
using PartitionMagic and install 98? Will it even work with the first
partition being NTFS?

I have never encountered this specific situation, so any assistance offered
will be greatly appreciated...

Many thanks in advance,
Ido

That new IBM ThinkPad will likely not support the old
and obsolete Windows 98 operating system.  If you are
determined to install it, I suggest you purchase a new
hard drive for the ThinkPad, remove the current one,
then install the new hard drive and try to install
Windows 98.  You'll not be very successful since
that new ThinkPad will not have the necessary
Windows 98 drivers necessary for Windows 98
to run correctly.  If Windows 98 will not run
properly, then simply reinstall the original hard
drive and you'll be back to Windows XP in short order.

Why in the world would they want 98 installed?   Anyhow, if you call IBM
they will send you the recovery CDs to rebuild the machine.   Simply tell
them you wiped the hard disk by accident and they should send you the CD set
to rebuild the machine.

Thanks for the quick replies!

Carey Frisch - my friend can't afford buying another HD for testing.

TheMachineRNC - couldn't understand your reply...did you read my entire post?

My friend needs Win98 for a few old engeneering programs that don't work
with XP (even in compatibility mode).

Thanks again. Any other suggestions?
