Microsoft thinks my copy of Windows XP Home is a pirated version. It came
installed new on my laptop, purchased from Dell in 2003. Can'f find a way to
get to Microsoft to re-verify my product code. Cannot believe that Dell
would install a pirated version, so must be a miscommunication between me and
Microsoft. How do I get this corrected?

The most controversial aspect is:
"Don't use Volume License media to install the initial Microsoft Windows
license on a new PC. Microsoft Volume License Agreements offer operating
system upgrades only. "
So, what do we do if the OEM copy contains: AOL, Norton, Works, Sonic (no
not the hedgehog, the one that knackers XP's CD-writing!) Bonzi Buddy, etc,
etc.. ? Are we supposed to run the volume install on top of this foistware?
Or do as I do, and forget volume licensing, just use the OEM license to do a
clean install. Cheaper anyway.

No one said anything about Volume License media.

Please download and install the latest WGA file:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/3/3/533a40be-936b-4267-b043-2f04233a78a
6/WindowsXP-KB905474-ENU-x86.exe
Then restart Windows. Does this resolve the issue?
If not, then:
Please follow this troubleshooting procedure:
1. Download and install the MGA Diagnostic Tool:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012
2. After running the MGA Diagnostic Tool, click
on the "Windows" tab and then click on "Copy to Clipboard".
3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the
"WGA Validation Problems" forum and paste the
results of the WGA Diagnostic Data in a detailed post.
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/default.aspx?SiteID=25
4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and
recommend an appropriate solution.

Same here, except the computer tech I got out of the yellow pages wiped my pc
clean then reloaded a pirated copy of xp professional. Dell provided a key
number for registration with cd's to reload home edition which came with it.
Wish me luck.
Seems to me the that all you should have to do is provide the key number
that came with the computer for microsoft to verify as valid authenticy. Good
luck dealing dell. It is no joy, believe me. Their resolution for everything
is to get on their online site.
