I need to update an older HP desktop computer.

The Operating System is Windows XP Pro without any service packs.  Microsoft
update has given me a such a huge list of updates needed, from 2002 -
present, its going to take forever.

Do I have to first install SP1 before I can install SP2?
-or-
Can I install just the latest service pack and be up to date?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Just install SP2.

SP2 rarely gives problems, the main thing to watch-out for is to scan the
computer for Trojans or malware first, as sometimes their presence can cause
the install to go badly wrong.

Burn the sp2 to cd, unless the PC is behind a nat router, otherwise it will
almost certainly be compromised before the update is downloaded

You do not have to install SP1 and then SP2...  As the web page for SP2
states - it is cumulative.

Download and install from the list below (download now, burn to CD/DVD,
install on the machine before even connecting to the Internet..) and you
won't have too much downloading to do when things are over.  Note that you
may want to think twice about installing Internet Explorer 7 and Media
Player 11 on such a machine.  IE7 can be a 'bit much' for older machines and
Media Player 11 has the same issue.  Not to mention both may conflict in
strange ways with programs you may have on said machine from the base
install.
