I am having trouble with my PC and may have to reinstall XP Pro for the second time. Is there a limit to the number of times I can do this? Is there a way to repair the current installation? The only limit imposed by XP for a single-user licence is that once you install it on one machine, then you can only re-activate it on that same machine. And yes, you can boot off your windows xp cd again and it will in fact prompt you to see if you want it to try and repair your installation rather than wiping it clea and reinstalling. On what do you base that? That may be reasonable for an OEM version of Windows, but it doesn't sound right for a retail version. Here's a scenario: Your hard motherboard fails, and you have to re-install WinXP on the same machine that has a new motherboard. The page you cited contradicts the post you made. Timothy Daniels is correct. I have used the Retail versions of Windows for many years, and I build my own computers. I am *always* able to activate the same copy on a newly built machine as long as I remove it from the old machine. I may have to use the phone activation method, but I can assure you that the retail version is not forever linked to the original machine it is activated on; I have done it numerous times over the last few years. Ive been using XP home for a while, and it turns out that ive wiped, and re-installed my XP home 25 times, that suprised me, whats more suprising is that i need a new cdkey, for the first half of windows activation. since ive used my cd key on the smae computer 25 times, i cant activate windows. |
