no ports-no internet

uninstalled vista from a new hp 1700 and put in xp. everything works except
have no com port -in device manager it's missing. have been told to unplug
pci card and replug so that computer knows it's there. Is there any other way?

Visit HP and download install winxp chipset and other drivers, specific to
your model
