Hello,
i bought new hdd with 500 GB capacity (I hope it will last long) and wanted
to install my XP on it. But after the first phase of install, after the pc
rebooted, the drive refused to run. On screen was only this: "cannot load
operating system". I treid lot of workarounds even tried to reformat the mbr,
but it did not help. Which worked was to change the drive access mode in bios
from auto(=CHS) to large. The auto(=CHS) access mode works too, but only if
you dont want to boot from the hdd. I can access (also format and everything
you want) from my old installation of XP whole drive with auto(=CHS) mode,
but cant install with auto(=CHS) mode. Does someone knows why? In addition, i
have also a 250 GB hdd which runs normaly with auto(=LBA) mode and is
installed in auto(=LBA) mode.
Thank you for help. And is any speed or reliabilty difference between Large,
LBA and CHS?
P.S. Sorry for english, I am not native speaking ;-)

You dont need to touch any of those settings. The only setting might be UDMA,
set at auto.Either way,a 500mb hd usually wont install the OS due to xps hd
limits on partitions w/o SP1.However,simply set new hd as slave to current,
format the hd in xp,once thru,go to run,type:XCOPY C:\*.* D:\ /c/h/e/k/r
Agree to all in the DOS window, once its thru, the entire OS is now on new hd &
bootable once its jumper pins are reset. Also,D: being new hd but if asigned
diffrent letter,then use that letter....
