Users and Groups with XP Home

I'm running into a problem with XP Home on our volunteer center's PC's. The
Users and Groups utility with XP Home only allows "Administrator" and
"Limited User". I don't want to have our students logging in with
"Administrator" rights. But the "Limited User" profile won't allow some
tutorial programs to run that I want the students to be able to use.

Is there a way to install the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) in XP Home
or some other way to give user privledges somewhere between "Administrator"
and "Limited User"?

Thanks,
Andrew

Change the file/folder permissions on the programs (the directories for, the
files for) that are having trouble running so that the "users" have the
necessary (possibly change?) permissions needed to properly execute these
applications.

Thank you.

I don't have access to the PC's today and I'm not that familiar with XP
Home, so I just want to be sure I understand - or you can explain a little
further.

I'm assuming that I will log in as an admin.
Then I'll navigate to C:\Program Files\PC Tutor\
Then I'll right-mouse-click on the "Learn Office" directory
Then I'll choose "sharing and security"
Then what do I do?  If I recall, the XP Home properties box is very
different than the XP Pro box (no using "simple" settings).

Also, will I need to do this for dotnet directories, windows directories, or
others?

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

Correct - you'll have to - in Windows XP Home - actually log on as *the*
built-in administrator - in Safe Mode.  No other native way to get the
security tab for folders/files needed.

You'll actually choose "Properties" and then view the "Security" tab.
You also may want to start the directory above this (PC Tutor)...

Not in Safe Mode - you can grant the "Users" group Change (Modify) rights to
said directory.

No idea - depends on the program in question - although it is doubtful it
will need more than read rights to most things other than the actual program
itself.  It does *not* sound like a complicated application.

Worst case - you might need to worry about the "All Users" profile directory
and perhaps (but unlikely) a registry key or two.

Filemon/Regmon can help you determine (tediously) what is accessed by said
application when it is ran (as a user who has the proper permissions.)

Thank you very much.

I'll give it a try and post back on the results.

Thanks again,
Andrew
