My 7 year old Dell Dimension 4100 has a 866mhz processor , 256 MB RAM,
and a  40 GB hard drive.  OK according to Microsoft, but  at least one  post
stated I REALLY need 512 MB RAM and a 1 GB Mhz processor.
Will the new system be slow as molasses on my old rig?

Without any upgrades it will be slow, your better off sticking with XP.

Will my system be able to handle Windows XP?

At the very least I would bump the ram up to 512, XP would run fairly well
on your specs with the memory upgrade.
