Have been asked by a friend to re-install XP onto a new HDD (of course he had
no media). The PC he has came with a COA label on it that appears authentic,
it says the following sans the license key:

-Windows XP Professional 1-2 CPU
-On the left side of the label written vertically, it says x08-73060
-E85-00970 on the top right
-license key in the middle

I have tried to use media disks with a yellow product key label to no
avail...What disks do I need to install this key with?

Jeff;
Your friend has OEM Product Key and you are trying retail media.
They are not compatible.
See if your friend can get media from the manufacturer.

There may be a hidden partition used for reinstalling Windows XP.
Check the manual and/or contact the manufacturer for details.

You could try a generic OEM Windows XP Pro CD, but you may not be able
to Activate.

Thanks JJ. I'll see if he can locate the media from the Manuf. I am
installaing a new HDD so the hidden partition deal won't work.

Have you ever heard of anyone installing with the retail key that I have (I
have media and key) and then advising Microsoft of same so they can reset for
the key on the COA?

Just a thought?

It doesn't work that way, in order to use the OEM key you must use an OEM
install disk. I seriously doubt that MS would do what your suggesting as the
licensing is completely different, and they are not obligated to provide
support on an OEM license.

I agree David. They basically said that you need to have the orig oem disks
otherwise it's time to pay the piper...Unfortunately my friend is going to
have to go back to the system builder which I advised him and to not accept
the fact that they don't have disks to give him like they did.

Thanks for the info and I appreciate the timely response from everyone that
took the time out to assist.

I am not sure I understand what you are asking.
But if you want to use your media with the OEM key, there is nothing
Microsoft can reset to make it work since that functionality is in the
media and not at Microsoft.

Appreciate it JJ. I have advised the owner that he needs to go to the system
builder and have them send him OEM disks...otherwise we need to support Bill
and co. for the O.S.

Just about any OEM disk will do.  You just have to use the COA on the side of
the case.  You could borrow one or two disks (you'll see my reasoning for
multiple disks below) from another friend or family member who has a Dell,
HP, Gateway or any PC from the big OEMs out there.  The only major issue you
may face is when you have to use the 5x5 key on the OEM sticker...  Some of
the keys (especially SP0 & SP1) don't like to work on SP2 install disks.
Anyone who has bought a PC in the last 2 years could very well have an SP2
disk so be careful.  If you get to the point where it asks you to provide the
5x5 key and it bombs out on you, make sure you didn't fat finger something.
If you're sure it wasn't your terrible typing ability, try to start over with
another disk.

Wow. It took all of these posts to get to that! I appreciate it since I do
have some OEM disks around...Incidentally, we found the "OEM" disk inside the
case that had been left for me but I didn't realize was the disk!

Thanks Tome...OEM license guru.
