windows update crashes computer

I was updateing our Gateway computer that is several years old.  Windows XP
is installed on the computer and it was working well enough.  After the
update, the computer reboots and I get to the desktop screen however I cannot
access anything.  There are no icons, start menu, taskbar.....nothing.  When
I control-alt-delete, I can reboot, log off, log back on in as another user
but I cannot get into the task manager....the same on all users.  No icons,
nothing.  I have tried safe mode with the same result.  Is there anything I
can do to fix this problem or am I locked out for good.  Thank-you!

Is SP2 installed,if so thier is a hotfix for that,kb885894  Otherwise try
useing
keyboard shortcuts,(Windows Logo+R  opens run) type:cmd  In cmd type:
Sfc /Scannow  Install xp cd,exit the menu page.When its thru,type:CHKDSK C:
/F
Agree to restart,type:EXIT  Remove cd Restart pc  Sometimes installing the xp
cd,select "browse cd" gets the pc responding again.

hi nancy

You can try the following steps .....do let me know if its useful:

1) Place XP CD (Bootable one) into the CD tray and restart the computer.
2) Computer should boot with the CD instead of Hard drive. (if required
change the boot sequence and CD Drive on the top of the list - save and exit
the BIOS).
3) It will show you option as "To repair windows press R to boot into
Recovery Console." Press R there.
4) Choose your drive on which your OS is installed. Press 1 or 2 if its
C:\windows etc.
5) It will ask for Administrator Password - enter the password.
6) Type the command - chkdsk /p - this command will take only few minutes
and will let you know if there are any errors on the volume (the complete
hard drive). You may receive an error "One or more errors found on the
volume."
7) If you see this error message type the next command to repair the drive :
chkdsk /r - this command may take 40-90 mins to repair your hard drive - time
varies as it depends on the count of errors as well as the size of the hard
drive.

I would also like to inform you that if there would be any corrupt data
present under any sector of your hard drive it will be lost!! You may not be
able to find data lost in this process!!
