I had XP Home pre-installed on my Dell home PC.  I have just acquired a
laptop and was wondering if anyone knows whether I can/should instal the same
version from the discs supplied at the time of my PC purchase?  Or do I have
to purchase again?

The version 'pre-installed' on the Dell is what is known as an OEM license.
It is non-transferable (from one computer to another) and no matter what
happens to the original computer - the fate of the license for WIndows XP
tied to that computer is the same.

Short:  No - you cannot use the license granted to you for use on the Dell
Home PC on anything other than the Dell Home PC.
