Recently cloned WinXP machine, loaded patches, etc. If I remove the
USB drive (ext) the system hangs about the point where the screen
'blanks' before the login screen appears.
If I power down and add the USB drive, it boots fine. WHen USB
attached, I do hear/see it being accessed at the above hang point.
any ideas?

Does it boot in safe mode?
or tried boot log mode, then checked what its hanging on?

yes - boots in Safe Mode.
think I tried boot log, but did not see the actual log file gen'd. is
that stored on root of C: as bootlog.txt?

Run Disk Management, and check the status of the partition(s) on the
USB disk.
