I did the test, it passed, windows XP CD in drive, started the upgrade,
got all the way to installing devices (counts down to 34 minutes) then
reboots, continues over and over. does not freeze, access from mouse,
keyboard still active.
any ideas? I have data on the drive I need to keep, or at the very
least, would like to keep. tried changing the boot up to go directly to
CD from bios, didnt change anything, always comes back with a "setup is
restarting" message.
on reboot sequence is
bios, then windows xp pro screen, then setup is being restarted screen,
then windows xp screen with collecint info on left (done(, dynamic
update (done), preparing installation (done), installing windows (setup
will complete in approx 39 min) still highlighted in red, the message on
the right, scroll through various things, the setup in apprx 39 min
changes to installing devices and counts down from 37 throu to 34
minutes, green bar shows movement, and then the keyboard blinks, the
mouse icon blinks, and the system reboots, and goes back to the same
spot.
it never tells me it had an error, nor does it say it is missing files,
etc.
any hel would be greatly appreciated.

The hang at 34 minutes is a well known hardware issue. When you install
an operating system other than the mouse, keyboard and monitor you
should have no external hardware attached to the computer, disconnect
all external hardware like printers, joysticks, removable drives, etc.
It's really a bit late in the game to be thinking about your valuable
data! Doing a major change such as an operating system upgrade without
a proper backup of important files is really asking for trouble!
Anything can go wrong when you do installations, things that can cause
you to lose all the data on the drive. If you want to reduce further
risks of data loss you can mount (slave) the disk to another Windows
2000/XP machine and save your files before you continue with the
attempted upgrade installation.

thanks John for the 34 minute hardware news, that is the kind of stuff i
needed.
I checked and the only thing that was connected (wireless network card,
and webcam) are now disconnected.
first try, rebooted at 34 minutes still
second try, same thing, 34 minute reboot.
keyboard, mouse, monitor, only things connected.
inside, 2 hard drives, dvdrw drive, video card
nothing else.
any other ideas?
Thanks
Paul
