Hi David B.
I don't want to write over the existing Data by doing a recovery. I just
want to do an OS install in place, rewriting the registry etc. It is a IBM
thinkpad. No recovery disks. I have not contacted IBM, they would suggest
running the recovery disks or sending it in for them to do it..
Regards...Les

Unless IBM supplied you with a winxp cd or their recovery has an option for
none destructive recovery, your options are limited;
Borrow an identical winxp OEM disk & repair using your key, or remove the hd
connect it to another PC and recover the data, or use a 'real' pc repairer
to do the above for you

Thanks DL;
I guess I should have initially provided more info, sorry for the confusion.
I have all of the resources necessary to reinstall/recover the OS/HD. What I
want to do is somehow reinstall the OS without affecting the
Data/Programs/Desktop settings that currently reside on the HD. In other
words repair the damaged OS while retaining the current state of the programs
etc.
Thanks again for your input...Les

You can't do a repair install without an installation CD, DL pretty much
covered everything in his reply.

You do a repair installation, via booting with the winxp cd
It will only work if you have a 'proper' winxp cd, and its sp level is the
same as that currently on the sys.
