BlankI have been attempting to set up a dual boot without luck.
WME on first partition.
Copy of WME on second partition and this is the one I'd like to upgrade with
XP. Or either if I can get it to work.

What do I need to do?

First off, since you can't create a dual boot system consisting of two
installations of Windows ME, your only option is to install ME on the first
partition and then install XP on your second partition.

I'm guessing that you already have Windows ME installed on your first partition.
If that's the case, put your XP Upgrade CD in the drive. Autoplay should start
the installation process. If you don't see the initial installation screen, open
your CD drive in My Computer or Windows Explorer and launch setup.exe.

On the first screen, select "Install Windows XP".
On the next screen, select New Installation (Advanced) in the Installation type
box.
Accept the license agreement.
Enter your 25 digit CD key.
At the Setup Options screen, hit the Advanced Options button.
In Advanced Options, put a check mark in the box next to "I want to choose the
install drive letter and partition during setup". This will allow you to select
the second partition for your XP installation.

Good luck

I managed to get two primary partitions with exact copies of WME, except I
removed the stuff XP would not like from the second.
Then I chose the install of XP that allowed me to direct it to the second
partition. It gets as far as setting up windows and screen goes black.

So how are you getting to chose what ME installation you boot into? Are you
using a boot manager?

Keep in mind that you can create a clean installation of XP using the upgrade CD
as long as you have a Windows ME installation CD.  Early in the installation
process you'll be asked to insert the ME CD to prove you qualify for the XP
upgrade.

Good luck
