i was wondering if there is some universal registry/policy setting that can
be set on an xp client so that all patches that are installed on the system
install with the /nobackup switch, without having to specify nobackup for
each individual patch.

any ideas?

Only way I know is to do it on a "per update" basis. Run the updat
executable file from a command-prompt and append the command with th
*/n* switch as in
D:\UPDATE\UPDATE.EXE /
That can't be done with automatic updates or even when using Window
Update website where files are downloaded and installed in a continuou
process till completed. You'd have to download the hotfixes/updates yo
want manually by selecting "Use administrator options" on the website
in order to install them via a command prompt one by one

Hardly worth the hassle. Much easier to simply delete the backups onc
you've established that the update has caused no problems
