I purchased a used computer on ebay that had Windows XP installed. Upon receiving the computer it prompted me that I has 25 days to register Windows. I attempted to do so following the link provided. It failed due to the product key. I got the bright idea to install my copy of Windows XP Home (upgrade) for which I have a good key. The install went pretty well but there were some files that failed to install (I had this same problem with my last successful install on my old computer). At the end of the process it appeared as if the computer attempted to reboot. It came up to the starting Windows screen. After about 10 seconds the screen goes blank and nothing further happens. Tried rebooting several times with the same result. Any help would be appreciated! If the used pc had/has xp pro installed,then that by itself will cause problems, you need to do a clean install when switching from pro to home or the oppisite installation...Also,youre xp upgrade installation if home to xp home,probably should also be a clean install (boot to xp cd,select install xp,delete the partition, create one,then let xp format & install auto. > I purchased a used computer on ebay that had Windows XP installed. Any > help would be appreciated! Thanks Andrew. I will try this but I have a question. Will this work (a clean install) from an upgrade version of XP? I looked for older versions of Windows and unfortunately found an upgrade version of Windows 98. Perhaps somewhere in my garage I may find the original Windows 95 - BUT that may be on 3.5 disks. I am in a pickle if I cannot install the Window XP upgrade in the manner which you recommended. You will need a qualifying version to point to when you use an upgrade version for a clean install, your win98 upgrade may work, but probably not win95 BTW if you get missing files during an installation, either the cd / cd drive or memory is likely faulty > Thanks Andrew. When you clean install with your winxp upgrade cd, at some point it will complain that it cannot find a qualifying app, at this point you pop your win98 cd in & point the installation to it, assuming this is accepted remove 98cd and insert winxp cd to proceede > Thanks for the reply.
