Hi,

My son has messed up his installation of Windows XP Home (came pre installed
on his laptop) and I'm trying to fix it for him.  He is currently running MS
Windows Home Edition v5.1 SP2 and every time the laptop loads it comes up
with the error message 'The procedure entry point freeaddrinfo could not be
located in the dynamic link library WS2_32.dll'.  Is there anything I can do
to fix this?

Hi MIke,

Thanks for the help, but my son doesn't (as far as I'm aware) have Visual
C++ installed on his PC - and I wouldn't know where to start rebuilding the
application ()what application?)

Sorry if I sound thick!

Mike

If this is a new Laptop with no data then perhaps the recovery option might
be the way to go

You need not have Visual C++ installed to need the run time dll.  Lots of
pieces of XP are written in C++, and they require this dll.

Thanks, Jim.  I understand that I don't have to have Visual C++ installed to
need the run time dll, but the solution that's being pointed at (KB822334)
seems to require Visual C++ before it can be implemented - or am I missing
something?

I have messed up his installation of Windows XP Home Edition (came pre
installed
on his pavillion 524c desktop) and I'm trying to fix it for him.  He is
currently running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 and every time the
pavillion 524c desktop loads it comes up with the error message ''Stop
0x0000007E' Can't Install Service Pack 3'.  Is there anything I can do to fix
this?
