install xp on formatted drive

I recently found out my xp pro was a pirate copy. I formatted the hard drive.
Now, I'm told, when installing a legitimate xp home OS,  that NTLDR is
missing. That's as far as I get. Why?

How did you 'format', why did you 'format' and have you cleaned your CD
drive, checked the new Winodws XP CD for scratches/smudges, etc?
