When starting the computer, Windows XP I am getting the following:
Checking file system on C
CHKDSK is verifying files Stage 1 of 3
File verification is complete

CHKDSK verifying indexes Stage 2 of 3
Correcting error in index $I30 for File 30958
Correcting error in index $I30 for File 30958
Now is is just sitting there.

What is causing this and what is the resolution

You might try downloading whatever Hard Disk Diagnosis software that make of
hard drive might have available on their web site, but the news is bad. You
probably have a failed drive, and need to replace it.
