dvd/cd created on Vista will not play or be recognized by Windows

A couple of us poor souls sitting at our 'puters trying to play lovely photos
and DVD created by one of our friends on 'Vista' are getting rather
frustrated by not being able to access them!...we've tried the
'troubleshooter' that sends you around in circles...going on line...more
circles...and different players with no results...any help would be much
appreciated!!!!!

Truthfully - those of us reading your plea likely would like to try and
help - but due to insufficient information, may be unable to do so in any
way.

Please describe what method your 'friends on 'Vista'' utilized to create
said 'lovely photos and DVD' and what exactly a 'lovely photos and DVD' is
and what method you are utilizing/have tried to play said 'lovely photos and
DVD'...

What hardware do you have in your computer - if that is where you are
attempting to play it? What make/model of CD and/or DVD player?

What applications have you tried to use to play it?

What did your 'friends with Vista' tell you they did/how to play it? Did
they test it before sending/giving it to you?

Ok...starting with the creation of the cd/dvd...it was done with windows
movie maker on a dell with vista OS...which was then trialed before handing
the photos/and slide show with soundtrack to us, it worked on their computer.
They are now on the other side of the country....

Yes, it was attempted to be played on an HP Pavillion dv4000 with Windows XP
OS AND tried on an 'emachine'...the applications used are trying to open at
'my computer' and getting a message that says, drive not accessable, soooo
trying other ways of going through windows picture and fax viewer, media
player, windows movie maker....we have had some final success with a program
called DVD X Rescue that is actually reading the disk and yes, showing
files...but still unable to access them....also, going through the
'troubleshooting' process with no success....

When all is said and done recognize there's basically a learning curve with
burning dvds. Not only does one have to learn in what manner to create a dvd
(data, movie etc.) but also must target what unit is to play them as not all
dvd drives read all types of dvds, e.g. there's +R/RW, -R/RW and now also
DL's also being added to the mix. I've run across units only play '+', some
only '-' and of 5 dvd drives in pcs in my house only one reliably reads DLs.
I also have 2 stand alone dvd players that seem to prefer '+' and that's it
although one of them will sometimes read 'DL' disks (reinsert, sometimes
more than once) but usually not flawlessly..

Is there any way that I can download a driver to specifically deal with
playing dvds or cds that are created on Vista?
