I have a Latitude D600 laptop, after charging the battery, the laptop will
not run on it, even though the laptop says that the battery is 100% charged.
I ran the battery down, the laptop switched itself off and  has never worked
on battery again.  Never had a laptop before, so wondered if there is
anything I need to do.

You probably need a new battery. I would use a battery tester on it, or ask
someone to do that.
