trying to install xp home on new hard drive - just after message stating
"Windows is checking your system configuration"  and error message comes up
with No: 268371168 then message saying a "an error occured during
installation on line 1768 in d:\xpspl\base\boot\setup\arcdisp.c." As I dont
have the installation running I cant get Product Code for Windows Support to
help and dont know what else to do. HELP would be appreciated!

The error implies that you are not using a good copy of the media for setup.
Your install disk is failing.
Since you are installing to a new drive, you probably are not using an OEM
version.
