I am running XP SP2. I am no longer able to log into Windows. Both my
Administrator account and single user account are not password protected so I
have never needed to enter them nor have I ever been promted.
As I boot up I now get the blue welcome screen and see the icon for my
account "Steve". I click on the user and I get the message "Loading
personal settings" then "Saving personal settings" then "logging off" thus
not allowing me to get in. I have tried to do a CNTL ALT +DEL and go in as
Administrator (without password) and that also does not work.
Finally I have tried to start XP in Safe Mode. THis time I get the blue
welcome screen and the icons for Administrator and my account "steve". Again
clicking on the icons I get the message "Loading personal settings" then
"Saving personal settings". The only option left is to click "Turn off
computer"
Please help.

I had a similar problem not long ago. XPpro seemed to accept the
password, 'Loading settings', then log right back out. I can't find
that exact description in my notes, but I think it was the case where,
when I tried Safe mode it told me that lsass.exe wasn't working. In my
case I'd recently replaced my c: drive with a new Seagate and still
had my old c:, 2 weeks old, on my desk. I put it back on, plugged
Seagate into caddy, reformatted it and imaged a backup back onto it.
It turns out that the Seagate had a blown sector and wouldn't accept a
restoreimage until this was done. You might want to reset passwords
per a thread 'Password Problems' back on 5-11-08, it would be easier
than reinstalling Windows, if it would work.

You have several options. It depends on what is doing that.
Booting to "Safe Mode With Command Prompt" will avoid any problems with a
corrupt user profile. From there, System Restore may fix it.

If no help, you may need to reset your registry to the original setup.
