Hello,

For some reason my scanner won't work anymore.  When I try to use it, I get
the following message:

"C:\Program Files\EPSON\Smart Panel\File.exe\:"/T:EPSON TWAIN 5" Application
can't be found."

When I check Device Manager, it shows the correct scanner and indicates that
the driver is in place.
When I remove and re-install the Twain driver, the message I get in the
notification area is that new hardware has
been found and that it is ready to use.  I haven't moved any files from
where they were installed by the installation software for Smart Panel, nor
by the Twain installer.

I'd sure appreciate any advice as to what could be the problem.

Thanks in advance,
Danno

Try disconnecting the scanner, then uninstall the scanner software & twain
drivers.
After the install shut the PC down, then connect the scanner and reboot.

I have had endless trouble with my Canon FS2710. It all boiled down to
installing the adaptec\aspi in drive C:
Having placed the files there, of course I had to run the aspiinst.exe. Then I
installed the scanner and have not had any trouble since.
There is even a program called aspichk.exe which does what the name suggests,
check the installation.

Thanks JS, but I've tried that until I'm blue in the face... to no avail.
In fact I just tried it now, one more time... at your suggestion.

Device Manager says the scanner is installed and is working properly.  It
says the driver is
(Twain) is there.  And the entire uninstall and re-install of Epson's Smart
Panel software went ahead smoothly.  But again.... Smart Panel can't seem to
find the Twain driver.

This is a mystery to me, since it all worked well in the past.  The
operating system was freshly installed a little over a month ago, and the
scanner has worked since then.  When I disconnect the scanner, windows
detects that it has been removed, and windows also detects when I reconnect
the scanner.

Any further suggestions would be welcome.

Did you delete the directory which contains the Twain drivers as part of the
uninstall process?

This time, no I don't think I deleted the directory.  I'm pretty sure I went
down that path while trying earlier this week though.  I'll try it again
today, and this time, I'll delete the directory too.  I'll let you know what
happens.

Thanks again!

Well I'm still having no luck.  The device manager says the scanner's driver
is in place and that the hardware is working properly.  But the Smart Panel
software can't find the driver. The software is there... the driver is
there, but the two are not communicating.  I've tried every way I can think
of to uninstall all the software and re-install it, but to no avail.

I'd sure appreciate any further advice.  It would be nice to scan documents
I need for work.

Thanks again,

Ok, this is the way I would do it given the info you provided.
First check Epson's web site for the latest drivers and software
and download to a folder.

Now follow these steps
1) Disconnect the scanner.
2) Uninstall the software and twain drivers.
3) Remove any folders/files related to the twain drivers or scanner
software.
4) Check Device Manager and remove any entries if necessary.
5) Create a Restore Point
6) Scan registry using the brand name/make of the scanner as key word for
search.
(Delete any entries found, but be certain it's a scanner related entry)
7) Reboot the PC and once again check Device Manager, it should show noting
for the scanner.
8) Now reinstall the software and twain drivers.
9) Shutdown the PC.
10) With the PC power off, connect the scanner and then restart/boot to
Windows.

Ok thanks JS.  I'll try that sequence exactly... tonight just to ensure I
don't screw anything up during the afternoon when I need my computer for
sure.

I'll let you know the results.  Stay tuned!

Thanks again.

JS, funny you should mention that.  I recently purchased a USB hub and I'm
not certain it's working properly.  As far as I can tell, the drivers for it
are updated.  But on occasion, I've unplugged the scanner from one USB port
and I did not get a signal that the hardware had been unplugged.  Then when
I plugged it into a different port, the hardware was detected.  So right
now, I have the scanner plugged directly into one of the computer's ports
and it (that port) seems to be working fine.

Just to make sure all the ports are working correctly, could you refresh my
mind about how to update those drivers or to test those ports?  I'm so busy
today I can hardly stay on any one topic for long.  lol

Thanks again!  You just might have zeroed in on a key issue I've been more
or less ignoring.

Start with Device Manager, you can (like your scanner) see if there are any
problems.
Should be labeled 'Universal Serial Bus controllers'.

Ok, I've checked them out with Device Manager.  There were 13 entries for
USB devices.  I don't think I even have that many USB ports, but in any
event, I was able to find driver updates for two of them.  Maybe that's
going to turn out to be the best solution yet.  But I'll also go through the
sequence you detailed earlier.  I'll do that later tonight and let you know
the outcome.

Thanks again for your interest and advice.

Just though of another way to test your twain software install.
There a graphics editor named IrfanView.
http://www.irfanview.com/

If you download, install and run this software,
located in the menu bar is an option named 'File'.
On selecting the 'File' option you should find an
option (near the bottom of the list) to select
'Select TWAIN Source', click on this option
and a popup should then display valid Twain sources
like you scanner. If you see your scanner listed,
select it, and then try to scan an object (Photo).

Well JS, you're not gonna believe this, but I tried every single thing you
outlined for me, and still.... that damned scammer won't work.  I
uninstalled and re-installed all software exactly as detailed, and I still
get the message that the Twain application can't be found.  Yet it's there
right in front of the nose of the Smart Panel (the software that needs
Twain).

I also downloaded Irfan View and clicked "Select TWAIN Source".  Both Twain
and the scanner itself appeared as options.  When I select either of them
and try to scan something, I still get the same error message.  But one more
question.  When I select a TWAIN source, what should I expect Irfan View to
do?  Because it doesn't seem to do anything when I select a TWAIN source.
Maybe it too can't connect with TWAIN.

By selecting Twain Source from the file menu it should load your
Epson software and then scan.

If you choose the 'Copy Shop' option also in the file menu you have the
ability to bypass the Epson software and directly scan a photo into
IrfanView.
Try 'Copy Shop' and let me know what happens.
Note that 'Copy Shop' will list both your Epson Photo editing/scanning
software
and the hardware name (make & model) of your scanner when you click on
Copy Shop's 'Select Twain Source' button.
You should choose the Epson hardware option.

For instance on my PC the Photo editing/scanner software is named:
'HP Precisionscan Pro 3.1'
The second entry in Copy Shop's 'Select Twain Source' list is my scanner
make and model which shows as:
'WIA-Hewlett-Packard Scanjet 5470C 1.0'

So for me using Copy Shop I select the second entry when asked to
select a Twain Source. I then check the 'Show Twain Preview' box.
(I check this option so the scanned image does not go directly
to the printer, but instead is displayed in IrfanView).
Next I click the 'Start' button located a the bottom of the Copy Shop
window to start the scan.

JS, I tried using 'Copy Shop' as you outlined, and indeed it does list my
Epson scanning software which is called "Smart Panel", and it also properly
recognizes the scanner make and model (Epson Perfection 1250), but to tell
you the truth, it's hardly "perfection".  lol

Anyway, when I selected to scan a color photo, Irfan View tried and tried to
reach the scanner but eventually gave me a message that it couldn't find the
scanner, although it listed it in the options.  Actually, a message popped
up saying "Irfan View encountered a problem and had to be shut down".

I just tried it again, and this time, when I go to 'Copy Shop' and click
"select TWAIN source", and then select the scanner itself.... nothing
happens.  The first time I tried it, Irfan View tried to scan, but now it
won't try.  I think it knows there's something wrong with Twain and wants
nothing to do with this problem.  lol

Anyway, I have to put this pain in the a.s issue to bed for tonight, and put
myself in bed for the night in a couple of hours.  In the meantime, I need
some down time.  Have a great night.  And thanks again for so much effort.

To anyone who's still following this thread, I'm more baffled now than ever.
Just for the heck of it, I tried the scanner this morning and the damned
thing works.  JS and I tried everything we could think of, and couldn't get
the Epson Smart Panel software to recognize that the Twain drivers were
there.  And now, a week later... the scanner works.  I've done absolutely
nothing since the last series of failed efforts.  Go figure!

Possible bad USB cable?
Cable not fully inserted in scanner or PC.
Your using Windows Service Pack 3 (just kidding)

Check driver status each time you boot the PC,
does it change from OK to having a problem and
since your scanner is currently working I assume the
driver status shows as OK?

The driver status shows OK every time.  So maybe the message I'm getting
doesn't really mean it can't find the Twain drivers... maybe it means it
can't find the scanner itself?  Bad cable or bad connection might be the
real issue.  Good idea JS.  I'll check that more closely.

JS, just a quick question!  When I scan the files and folders for anything
Twain related, I can still find a few .dlls that are in the Windows
directory, even after uninstalling Twain from my computer.  These .dlls are
definitely related to the Twain application, but is it OK to delete them
even from Windows?  Like this one for example, which is located at
C:\Windows\twain_32.dll.  Also in this folder are 3 files named 'twain.dll',
'twunk_16', 'twunk_32', and I've verified that they are all related to the
Twain drivers.  Would it be OK to delete them even though they're in the
Windows directory?
