I got all my desktop icons arranged exactly the way I wanted them. Then I
right clicked to save their positions and selected "Modify" ...well, I knew I
didn't want the other ones :-(... Of course, they all ended up smack dab on
the left side of the screen. Ho-Hum. Can I just "undo" it, or do I have to
start over?

Try Ctrl/Z though it may be too late now.

The desktop icon settings are saved at logoff. If you haven't logged off since the problem happened, then try restarting the Explorer shell.
