Help! trying to do a new installation of xp home sp2 (yes have disc) on
compaq presario laptop, (already had same os on it, wasnt able to repair, so
doing new installation) In installation process kept getting error message,
file corrupt or missing, contact system admin. Now will not boot at all, new
error message: file missing or corrupt, \windows\system32\config\system.sav
Went into recovery console, am currently running chkdsk /r, now what else
can I do to fix this issue or am I just screwed?
Thanks.

I would suspect a corrupt original media install disk.

Are we talking format & install or are you creating an install of windows in
a new folder so as not to lose your files.

Had already removed everything i needed to keep, so it is a format and
install.

I would try the install again, make sure you select the full format option.
If it doesn't work a second time then I would suspect the media is damaged
as per Mark's comment.

Are you booting off the CD? Is your CD a restore/recovery disk or an
installation disk?

Why did you chose to reload?  Were there errors on the old system?
You seem to have corruption, as others have said, maybe the CD, but
could it be that you had HD problems?   In which case the HD has not
been solved by the reload.

Do you have another PC to do a test on the CD.
CDCheck does a good job.  http://www.kvipu.com/CDCheck/download.php
