Automatic Shutdown after installing McAcee Internet Security 2006

Hi.  My PC is doing an automatic shutdown after I installed a new copy of
McAfee Internet Security 2006.  I get the following message immediately after
login:

The system is shutting down.  The shutdown was initiated by NT
AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service
terminated unexpectedly.

Also, I no longer see the Windows Start button or Taskbar ever since
installing McAfee Internet Security 2006.

The McAfee Tech Support said they couldn't help because of the MS issues ;-(

Any suggestions on how to stop the automatic shutdown and/or restore the
Start and Taskbar functions would be greatly appreciated.

BTW - Hitting F8 and selecting the option to disable the automatic shutdown
doesn't help.

Hi Charles,

Would you expand on your last line about F8-selective-startup?
And have you tried booting to Safe Mode ? for purposes of reviewing list of startup apps, and to de-install McAfee?

When you setup McAfee IS 2006, did you login with "the" Administrator account?

Hi Maurice,

Regarding the boot on F8 comment... I tried using the "Disable automatic
restart on system failure" from the list of options when pressing F8 while
re-booting.  Using this option did NOT prevent the automatic shutdown from
happening.  I've tried the various Safe mode boot options and still can't get
the Start button or Taskbar.  The PC always does the automatic shutdown with
a 60 second timer.  I get the same symptoms with every boot option I try.

I performed the McAfee standard install using my personal account which is
setup as the Computer Administrator account.

If you got into Safe Mode ----- once it finished loading up --- if you do not see Taskbar ---- press Control + Escape keys, or press the Windows key.   What happens then?  Can you get to programs menu?

If Safe mode is utterly un-usable, did your try F8-selective startup, and then selecting Last Known Good?

Maurice,

Thanks for the reply.  Once in Safe Mode, hitting <Ctrl> <Esc> or the
Windows key doesn't do anything.  I can't get the Start button or Taskbar.
Also, as soon as I loginto Safe Mode my mosue stops working.

The Last Known Good option generates the same symptoms.  Perhaps that would
have worked if I tried it soon.  I've probably re-booted the PC over a
hundred times now trying different things.

Also, I don't seem to have the Blaster worm since the Msblast.exe process
doesn't appear.  My PC was working fine prior to the McAfee IS 2006 install.
I had current updates of MS, anti-virus, and anti-spyware software.
