Even though I'm still not convinced of the value, after much study and prep I decided to install SP2. I followed all suggestions for a successful install. Downloaded all current updates to SP1, disabled McAfee virus and firewall, and ZeroSpyware spyware programs even removed them from startup after full clean scans, disabled all peripherals, removed all virtual drives i.e. Game Drive, I am the administrator. I used the install disc and after indicating a successful install I restarted the system. I then got the "Sorry Windows was unable to start" screen. I let it try to restart after count down but just got the same screen. I then started in safe mode and was able to access Windows. I removed SP2 and restored to SP1. I then tried to update to SP2 via Windows update site with the same results. What am I missing? I am running SATA Raid 0, and have a gig of memory even though Msinfo32 shows only 512 MB, the system is 2 year old assembled by ABS Computers. SP2 should only be applied to a healthy system. First how much memory does your bios say you have? If it is 512MB try taking a memory stick out and see if the memory is still 512Mb. If it is swap the stick with the one you removed and see if that is 512MB. If they are both working then there could be a motherboard fault. Once the memory issue resolves you will have more chance of getting the service pack working. The memory is not the problem. If I go to the system panel it sees the full gig . It's just a known glitch in Msinfo32 reporting tool. I pointed out that I have a gig because the Msinfo log I attached only reports up to 512MB. If you have a gig or more try running Msinfo32.exe you'll see the same results. See an excerpt from a Nero info log below. If I run other info tools such as ATI's it also shows a Gig. When I was on the phone one time with ABS tech support they said it was a glitch in Msinfo32 a lot of people had reported. Could it be due to the way memory is addressed? My memory is dual channel. If it's dual channel maybe it looks at memory as two 512MB channels and reports it that way. That was my thought. Even though I don't think I have a virus I'm downloading some other virus software. I'll do some additional scanning. I'm going to update the BIOS also. I don't think it's the BIOS but I'm at a loss for anything else.
