Hello John,
Provide some more details.
I presume this pc has XP and IE 6.

Is the problem at one specific website?  if so, provide website address.

Does this problem occur only when you have to login ?
Anything to do with Hotmail?  or any web-based email service?

NB. Javascript is an inherent part of the browser, and if it is broken, you'd see a whole lot of other problems.

John,
By IE 6, I mean Internet Explorer browser version 6  (which is in XP).  Unless you indicate otherwise, that's what I would presume you are running.
It appears this has to do with a Hotmail account (perhaps MSN) , and the login for that at passport.com

Are you following the usual procedure for logging in to Hotmail?

By chance, do you have MS Outlook on this pc?

I encourage you to review the setting for E-mail client on this system.
In Internet Explorer, select Tools > Internet Options> click on Programs tab.
In the block, "Internet Programs", look at "E-mail" line.  What does it show for email program?
If you have Hotmail, you should set it to Hotmail.   Press the down arrow (at E-mail) and make your selection.

Another thing to consider, delete contents of your temporary internet cache folder, and possibly delete any old passport cookies.

Hi Maurice,
Yes im using IE 6 & I log in in the usual way. I do have MS outlook on
this pc. Hotmail is my Email client, I checked as you asked. I also
deleted temporary internet files as you asked and also manually deleted
all the cookies from my cookie folder, took ages. One thing Ive noticed
is that if I try to email from a hyperlink, on the address bar, before
the address it says `javascript:` if I delete this sometimes the link
will open but Im still getting the same 'Fatal Login Error. hr =
80041034, f = -2147217356' message come up most of the time, Regards
John.

Hi John :-)

Please answer the following questions:

What version of Outlook do you have?
Do you use the Outlook, or just installed it along with the other Office
programs?
Do you use Windows Messenger?
Do you use AutoUpdate?
Do you use Microsoft Update? Or Windows Update?
Can you log on to the Hotmail?
Is the problem only when you click a link in a website, in Hotmail?  I am a
bit confused as to what links and where are giving you the error.

Try the following and see if it helps:

Javascript does not work (hyperlinks)
http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm
Hyperlinks don't work
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/48.html
Update your scripting engine.  For 2000 and XP go to

The install includes a new jscript.dl

i dont use it as it wont send  emails, didnt help.)
I use messenger 7.5
I use microsoft updates
I can log into hotmail no probs
The links Im having trouble with are the email links on web pages, like
when it says email us, so I click on the link and get the error.
I just loaded the new script editor as you suggested, still no go. I
dont know about the java thing at the moment, I will try later.
Thanks for your help, john

Hi JOHN :-)

Thank you very much for the updated information.  You say the links you are
trying to open are the contact email links on the websites. Could you please
post a couple of the links here that you are having the problem with?  That
way we can test them and perhaps see if there is an issue with the links, or
perhaps a clue as to what may be required to resolve the problem.  It may be
a setting or a 3rd party software that may be causing the problem.

I think it is unusual for a login with passport to be  http:
Have you tried changing the protocol to  https:  instead?

You might find the symptom resolution in this article helpful.

<title>KB813444 - How to troubleshoot situations where you cannot
complete MSN sign-up or connect to SSL secured (128-Bit) Web sites
by using Internet Explorer in Windows XP</title>

I think it would be interesting to know where that message
is originating.   E.g. whether it is an error being detected
on the server you are trying to connect to or on your machine.

FWIW  here is what a search for that code returns

http://windowssdk.msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wmis
dk/wmi/wmi_error_constants.asp

(MSN search for

<quote>
WBEM_E_PROVIDER_FAILURE

Provider has failed at some time other than during initialization.
</quote>

One possibility is that it means the the  WMI  service
(Windows Management Instrumentation)
is not running.   You could check that on your machine
and start it if it is not running.

However, I suspect that this could be a secondary symptom
caused by the primary symptom of the login failure.

Good luck

Robert, please, I just want a solution, I havent a clue what protocol

I can press buttons, just tell me which ones.
Thanks, John.

Hi Jan,
I don't think there is any thing wrong with third party software, its
definitely my machine, I cant even email myself on my own website. Did
you read about my protocol? I don't know what that is, but if you could
tell me how to change it Ill give it a go!
Thanks John

John,
Suzy here.  I HAVE THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!! When I try to email
someone using a link on someone's website, I am directed to a Microsoft
Passport sign in.  I sign in using my .net passport, and it goes to the
white screen and says Fatal Login Error. hr = 80041035, f =
-2147217355.   HELP US PLEASE SOMEONE.  I have tried all of the stuff.

John did you upgrade to XP at some point?  Did you ever have Verizon as
a provider?

OK, someone help us out here?!?
suzy - 20 Mar 2006 22:57 GMT
Hi John,

Suzy here again.  I really feel for you because I've had this problem
for awhile, and it's very frustrating.  I can't remember exactly when
it started, but I know that it happend AFTER I stopped using Verizon
with MSN.  I moved to NC and there was no Verizon here, so I had to
switch to TWC RoadRunner.  I kept my MSN screen name, and am using my
address and email through Hotmail now (which I hate, btw.)

Anyway, I want to email people from links, but I'm not able to.  I keep
getting the similar message.  I am now pasting what the address bar
says:

Hmmm, Lots of gibberish to me, but I"m sure there has got to be a
computer expert out there that can help us get rid of this
problem!!!!!!

Thanks,

Suzy

Suzy,

Setting aside the Hotmail  (web-based) thing aside, for the moment.
Q:  Do you regular email service thru your Internet service provider?  if so, do you use (and is it setup for email accounts) Outlook Express or MS Office Outlook ?   (btw, every Windows system (having Internet Explorer)  likely has Outlook Express or can get it !! )

Reason for asking about this is:  Email links on websites are such that they really work the best if you have an email-client program, like Outlook Express or Outlook, or whatever-other-brand   ( as long as they use POP/POP 3 protocol).  (btw, John: don't get stumped on protocol.  Forget I used it here.  You need to get Outlook setup again & get your service provider to help you inputting the correct settings.)

IF you have one of those, then....
In Internet Explorer, select Tools > Internet Options> click on Programs tab.
In the block, "Internet Programs", look at "E-mail" line.   Use the drop down list, to select your email program   (not Hotmail or a web-based service).

If nothing else, get Outlook Express set & put that as your selection in Internet Explorer.

For the techies:  I expect the websites use mailto link with some pre-filled info, AND, these unlucky people happen to be Hotmail (web-based) clients  who also have to do a passport login  ...... result is  ........

Bottom line is to have a local-installed email program, properly configured, which need only be used in these situations.
You can still continue to use Hotmail as you normally would.   (eg, use Hotmail for all else, except for email links on websites).

Maurice, !

Thank you for your response!!!!!!!

Now were're getting somewhere.  I do have outlook express, and the
reason I wasn't using it was because when I tried to email someone from
a link, the outlook came up with my suzetcrepe@verizon.net as the
default address.  I just went back again and noticed in the pull down
bar my msn address is also there!  Wow, I feel kind of dumb, now.

I never used the Verizon.net address, and I have tried to change my
.net password.  I go through the set up process, it says it's changed,
but this verizon.net is still coming up.  I have tried to remove
everything having to do with verizon from my computer, but stuff is
still hanging around in there.

This is a great help, so far, though!  Still stumped, though.  Outlook
express didn't let me send the mail with the msn address; it sent me to
an msn window member screen, and I don't have msn anymore either.
Damn!! this is frustrating.  I can't get rid of this junk.

I would love to use the outlook express because the editing looked so
much better than hotmail.  I don't like hotmail, but that's what I'm
stuck with.

Continuing, my ISP is RoadRunner.  I haven't set up any mail through
that, because I didn't want anymore addresses, and I'm not really
impressed with RR's home page.  I haven't even really tried their
email.  I really wanted to keep my msn address, because I've had it so
long, and it would be a pain to change it.

Would it be possible to really change my .net passport from
suzetcrepe@verizon.net to suzetcrepe@msn.com?  I think it's buried deep
in there, like the registry or something.

Would it be possible to stop outlook express from defaulting to an msn
sign in screen?  Then I could use outlook express.  I know this all
sounds a little confusing, but I don't have verizon with msn or msn
premium anymore as my providers even though I have an msn address.  I
was able to keep my msn address with hotmail, even though I don't have
msn anymore.

Well Maurice, you sure helped shed some light on things.  I think it's
fantastic you're out there and I could ask!  And I'm glad John wrote
in, because I knew exactly what his problem was becasue I have it
too!!!!!

Any suggestions now?  I didn't quite understand what you meant about
having a local installed email properly configured, unless you mean
road runner?  But then when I email from the link, it would be from my
road runner address, which I haven't set up.

Oh and for the record, I have Windows XP SP2.  Here are the errors I
got when trying to use outlook express:

Hi Suzy,

There obviously are several issues here (which I'll not address all at once.)

I am only suggesting you get Outlook Express properly setup, so that when it /is/ needed, you can send email.
The 3 pieces of info (there are more but I'm only covering these) that are critical to put in correctly are:
email address
name of incoming mail server
name of outbound mail server

This info you can get from Roadrunner.  I encourage you to call up their tech support.  The info may even be on their support website.
(You can later have email responses sent to 1 distinct account [ example, msn ]  by setting a proper "reply to" ---- but address that later).

I am not familiar with either MSN or Hotmail.  So regarding those issues, hopefully someone will help.
You should also see this group
microsoft.public.msn.discussion

(As a sidenote, putting your real email address in a newsgroup puts you at risk for getting floods of spam email.)

Changing a passport account info is a real pain.  Sometimes you also have to follow up by deleting any "passport" cookies from your Temp folder and the Temp internet files folders.

Take a careful look at this article at MS Knowledge Base

Try a search?

E.g. let's find out what that code means usually.
We'll take the hex value but prefix it with  0x
and give it some general context...

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wmisdk/wmi/wbem
errorenum.asp

(Google web search for
   0x80041035 microsoft
)

<quote>
     wbemErrUnsupportedParameter
     2147749941        0x80041035
One or more parameter values, such as a query text,
is too complex or unsupported. WMI is therefore requested
to retry the operation with simpler parameters.
</quote>

Well, looking at your  URL  it does look complicated.
What were you doing which resulted in that?
Some kind of query?

More importantly whatever it was is apparently what is causing a login
request to passport.   Could you do that separately before trying this query?

Let's try another search, this time in the newsgroups,
to see if somebody else has reported this symptom
and found a more specific resolution:
