Does anyone know if there is a programme available, that
will allow me to record direct from my camcorder onto my
dvd writer in real time without having to upload from dv.

Roxio certainly will so I presume the Nero suite will as well.  Most folks
want to edit their stuff first though.

Some of the settop DVD recorders will that have a Firewire port.  You can
plug in and record directly.

BUT!  There is no stopping and starting.  DVD format does not support
stopping and starting, so you need to keep recording like you would for an
event.
