Can anyone out there help me. I have downloaded my 1st video from my
camcorder using WMM v2.3. When I try to edit it I gat audio but no
video/picture in the preview screen. Pulling my hair out trying to edit the
movie without a picture!!
Anyone any suggestions. I have a codecs bundle (Ace Mega Codecs pack) if
that is any help.

If it's a digital camcorder, are you using firewire to connect?

Hi Cari thanks for your reply :)
Yes I'm using IEEE1394 firewire to connect JVC DVC to PC. I can play and
view saved films with all players but cannot view the preview screen to edit
them :(

You haven't accidentally unchecked the preview box have you?

Hi Cari, I have tried both checking and unchecking the preview button at
video capture stage. When files are downloaded into WMM and dropped into the
timeline and play is pressed I only get audio and do not see any video in the
WM style player in the top right of the WMM screen. When I am importing video
I can preview what is being downloaded but obviously I cannot edit at this
stage. Time to pull some more hair out! :(

Just joining this one.
I've noticed your mention of a codec pack? Is there any reason for this? A
lot of codec packs are bundled with spyware etc which can do odd things to
apps, so I'd run a variety of spyware/addware adn anti-virus checks to be
sure nothing is amiss here.
Capturing by firewire uses MS's own codecs, so no extra ones are needed for
this.
What format are you capturing the file to, it's best to use dv-avi, as this
is easiest to edit and suffers no furhter compression at the capture stage.
Are you viewing on the same screen as capturing? Just in case you have two
monitors, overlay is only supported on one.
Do you have any other editing software installed? You could try it, or
download a trial of one, ULead is good and is easy to remove if you don't
like it or it's served it's purpose of testing.

Hi Graham. thanks for your help in this. I mentioned codec pack as I have had
picture problems in the past and the bundle I have now has cured all earlier
problems. I have run AOL anti-spyware and spybot and others and system
"appears" to be spyware free for all intents and purposes. I have McAfee,
Stinger etc. ( fully updated) and again appear to be virus free. I have just
tried capturing a video in dv-avi but for a 36 second clip took about 129Mb
of disc space! (is that normal?) Anyway this didn't work either. I am viewing
on the same monitor. At "capture video" I do get to preview the movie (if I
want to) but dont generally do this for video quality purpose (as advised).
Its just when I import a saved movie to edit is when I get no picture on the
player - only audio. It's impossible to edit the movie if you can't view it.
I may take up the advice and try a Ulead trial. Cheers

Sounds about right, it's 12gb per hour.

If you could try another app and report back, I'm a little stumped :(

Have you tried going to Tools/Options/Compatability and unchecking some of
the video drivers?  Maybe there is a conflict.  Let me know.
