Our computer club's main computer used for meetings has a terrible
problem displaying video files. It has  P4 2.8 ghz processor with 512
mgs RAM and ( I believe ) a SSI video card.

Normal display is fine -- desktop and regular programs. But when we try
to display a video clip ( all filetypes display same problem ) it is
terrible. Many horizonal lines like looking at the picture through
venetian blinds. It has DirectX 9.0C and Windows Media Player 10. Should
be up to date on everything.

I installed DIVX this morning to try a different program and get the
same results.

I've ran dxdiag.exe and it reports all is well .. no problems.

Device manager shows everything functioning with no problems.

We only have problems when displaying video files. Still pictures show
fine in PSP and Paint.

All suggestions / solutions / jokes appreciated :)

Do the files look the same when watched on a different PC?

No, some of them have been received via email and, as far as I know,
looked fine on the other peoples machines. I will have to test emailing
to my machine next Tuesday when the club has its next meeting to be
positive of this but at this moment I'm 99.9% sure they only have a
problem on the one computer.

Received by email?  Then they're going to be small and extremely low
resolution.

Not when sent via broadband connections.

What are the file sizes of the videos in question.  Remember, DV-AVI (best
format) takes up 12gb per hour.  Unless you have a private email server
which allows unlimited file size attachments, I doubt that the resolution is
very high.

Dunno, I won't have access to the club's computer again till next Tue
and I will then email them to myself and try them on my machine and
check file sizes etc. etc.

I offer no solutions, but the above sounds like what I get when I view
(and record) from my TV capture card, some channels whose reception
(air) is not fantastic in my area. So, IF what you are viewing came via
recording from TV, it may be worthwhile to consider THAT as being the
source of the problem, rather than you PC system.

OK. Two mathematicians sit at an outdoor cafe. As they sip their
drinks, they notice a person enter the house across the way. A few
minutes later, they notice two people leave the house across the way.
After a moment, one mathematician turns to the other and says: "Now if
someone else enters the house, it'll be empty again."
